Dear Fellow Alumni,

When you watch the university students heading back to school, do you get a little nostalgic for the 'good old days'? If so, you won't want to miss Kwantlen's first-ever homecoming event happening Saturday, Sept. 25.

In addition to a catered alumni reception at the Surrey campus Grass Roots Cafe, 'Homecoming Day' is filled with Kwantlen Eagles sports action. First off, the men's and women's soccer teams face Thompson Rivers University at the new varsity sports stadium. Later in the day, cheer on a high-energy match between the current Kwantlen Eagles basketball teams and their alumni predecessors. Friends and family are welcome. Please see details below.

On the board front, we are proposing revisions to KUAA's existing constitution and bylaws. Along with changes regarding the manner in which board elections are run, we have proposed a new bylaw that would allow alumni to attend AGMs remotely.

The other major change would allow for former Kwantlen faculty, staff, senate members and students (who did not receive a credential) to become "associate" members. This will provide those who have had a connection with the university an opportunity to remain a part of our community. Associate members, however, will not be granted voting rights.

These changes are a reflection of our growth over the past year and are available for review in detail on the KUAA website. Alumni will have a chance to vote on the proposed changes at the AGM on November 15, 2010.

See you on Homecoming Day!

Eagles All-Star Credits Athletics, Family and Teachers For Success
Kwantlen EaglesA sports-themed Homecoming Day would not be complete without Eagles basketball alumnus Prince Carino.

A league all-star holding the second position in all time scoring in the BC Colleges Athletic Association, the four-year team captain is the first and, currently, only Kwantlen athlete to have his jersey retired--quite a feat considering his original plan was to play college football.

"I always thought of myself as a football player playing basketball," said Carino. "I really had to put the extra time in."

Admired by coaches and teammates for his work ethic and dedication both on and off the court, Carino attributes his success to family and teachers who told him to "always work hard and never give up."

"They taught me that if you're going to do something, be the best at it," he said.

He also thanks the Eagles head basketball coach, Bernie Love, who recruited him out of St. Thomas More, an independent high school in Burnaby, BC.

"Bernie is great with up and coming players. He is really good at letting you know school comes first. That was really important to me. Education is what is going to carry you for the rest of your life."

Carino graduated in 2006 with an associate of arts degree in psychology. Today, he is a constable for the Vancouver Police Department and believes his experience on the court helped prepare him for his policing career.

"Trying to get in is a difficult process," he said. "[Basketball] helped me to learn to stick with what I was doing to achieve my goals."

Carino continues to play basketball and is sure to wow crowds at the upcoming Kwantlen versus Eagles alumni basketball game taking place at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 25 (Homecoming Day) in the Surrey campus gymnasium.

Have you ever wondered why doing some tasks at your job feel like you are writing with your left hand? I have found there are certain aspects of my work that come naturally and easily to me, while others feel like I am forever paddling upstream.

Recently, however, I came across the book StrengthsFinder 2.0 written by Tom Rath. The philosophy behind it is that all too often we miss out on reaching our true potential because we spend more time trying to fix our weak points rather than developing our strengths.

Along with hundreds of excellent strategies to help you leverage your natural talents, it comes with an access code for the online StrengthsFinder assessment tool, which is both fascinating and enlightening. To learn more visit www.strengthsfinder.com.

One way to make great use of your strengths is by volunteering. It not only provides a feel-good opportunity to give back to your community, it can also help you develop your personal and professional network. Gillian Hewitt Smith at Notable, Canada's website for young professionals, explains more.

In addition to opportunities at KUAA, here are two websites that list hundreds of volunteer positions:
·  Go Volunteer
·  Government of BC Board Resourcing

In the spirit of tapping into your greatest natural talents, I'll leave you with this inspiring quote from Debbie Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies: "The important thing is not being afraid to take a chance. Remember, the greatest failure is to not try. Once you find something you love to do, be the best at doing it."
