Dear Fellow Alumni, It is
hard to believe August is already here and in just a few short weeks Kwantlen's
newest students will begin orientation week and a new stage of their lives will
start to unfold. As we
all know, learning is a lifelong process, especially when it comes to our
careers. Often we start in one direction and soon find many more avenues open
up along the way. To
help our alumni leverage the professional opportunities available to them,
Kwantlen Alumni Affairs, in conjunction with Kwantlen Career Services, is
launching a free speaker series on career development. The first event will
focus on the field of criminology and will be held September 28th from 4pm to
6pm. Please read more here. If
you're looking for a great opportunity to expand your resume and gain valuable
board member experience, KUAA is currently accepting applications for five volunteer board of director positions. It is a
rewarding role that allows members to work on a variety of interesting
projects, such as our most recent and exciting undertaking-the KUAA mission
statement. The
board is looking forward to hearing your feedback on the final draft as the
statement will set the tone and direction for how you would like to see the
alumni association move forward. Please read below for more information or
visit the feedback page to submit your
comments. Enjoy
the rest of the summer!

Rewarding Career for Enviro-Friendly Grad

Chris McCue and crew at contamination remediation site in Red Deer, Alberta
 | Kwantlen
alumnus Chris McCue is cleaning up-big time. The
1994 Environmental Protection Technology graduate and president of McCue
Environmental Contracting (McEC) has spent the last 16 years providing
remediation services at some of the most challenging contaminated sites in
urban and remote locations across Canada and the U.S. Specializing
in the installation and management of soil and groundwater remediation systems,
his designs have been featured at remediation technologies symposiums in Banff,
Alberta, as well as in the Association of Professional Engineers and
Geoscientists of B.C.'s Innovation Magazine. "Really,
it's just a glorified plumbing job," laughs the modest certified applied
science technologist. "My friends like to call me the environmental plumber." McCue
founded McEC in 2000. Since then, his annual billings have grown by more than
500 per cent, a feat that can be attributed to his dedication to innovation and
100 per cent success rate. He has provided services at oil refining, oil
terminal, bulk fuel storage, fuel retail, chemical manufacturing, dry cleaning,
highways, landfill, mine, pipeline and spill sites. "In
the past, wherever petroleum was handled, unfortunately, spills occurred," he
said. "Whether it's an enormous spill, such as a hole through a tank, or an
accumulation of little spills here and there, they happen." In
addition to cleaning up contaminated sites, in July 2007, McCue launched a
water treatment services division and is now providing engineering dewatering
and water treatment services to the construction and mining industries, as well
as a broad range of industrial/commercial sector clients. McCue's
work takes him to many different-sometimes challenging, but exciting-areas. His
most memorable location, in terms of sheer beauty, is the small village of
Masset on Haida Gwaii. "Every
project is unique and has its own challenges but overcoming these challenges is
what keeps this work interesting," said McCue. "It's a rewarding career. I have
no regrets. If it hadn't been for my program at Kwantlen, I would never have
had the opportunity to go off on my own." To

10 Steps to Buying Your First Home
|
By Matthew Lee, 2003 BBA grad and sales
manager at Macdonald Realty. Buying
and selling real estate is often one of the largest transactions that most of
us will ever make in our lifetimes. These experiences can be thrilling,
rewarding and sometimes a little
stressful-especially if it is your first home. Hiring
a knowledgeable buyer's agent to assist and guide you through the process will
help minimize the potential for worry and any unforeseen challenges. However,
understanding the basic steps ahead of time will help you feel more comfortable
and prepared when it comes time to "make your move." While
a comprehensive timeline include more specific details, a typical process would
include the following: MORE>>> Matthew Lee graduated from the BBA program
in 2003 and is a sales manager with Macdonald Realty, a locally owned
company with 17 offices and nearly 1,000 sales professionals throughout BC. Matthew can be reached at 604-631-2530 or by email at mlee@macrealty.com.
