About Us

|
The Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing is a coalition of religious organizations and individuals working with and on behalf of homeless, poorly housed, and at-risk individuals. A not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, The Assembly was founded in 1986 at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City.
The Assembly addresses homelessness in two ways: helping those who are homeless recover from the trauma associated with their homelessness and begin to rebuild their lives - through our Life-Skills Empowerment programs; and by working with our broad base of coalition partners in supporting the establishment of public policies that will provide needed services to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and supporting policies that will produce and preserve housing affordable to homeless and low income New Yorkers.

Day of Faith Multi Faith Service
Sunday, October 30th , 4:30pm Zuccatti Park - Broadway and Cedar Street
| October 30th will be a SPECIAL EVENT: A DAY OF FAITH. The whole weekend actually, but culminating in a group action on 10/30. All faith communities that would like to welcome one or two of the "occupiers" to your weekend service (10/28-10/30), please let us know! Our hope is for a day of outreach in our worship services, where "Occupy Wall Street" can be discussed in a faith context. We want ALL our faith communities to show up for a special 4:30p service (10/30), to show, in person, our support for Occupy Wall Street. Please mark your calendars, and plan on bringing your faith communities out to join us.
If you and your faith community are planning on coming down to Zuccotti Park for our coordinated "Day of Faith" Service this coming Sunday, please email occupyfaithnyc@gmail.com (subject October 30th) so we can start to plan. Because our effort will be to create a truly multi-faith program that doesn't run forever, I can't guarantee we can have all everyone who wants to speak incorporated in the program. But if you do want to be part of the program, please let us know.

People of Faith Invited to join the Support Committee Occupy Faith NYC - Multi-Faith Meetings Thursdays 10am Judson Memorial Church
| To Discuss:
- Coordination of Messaging & Activities for (10/30 "Day of Faith") - Ongoing Material/Space Support for those in Zuccotti Park, - Organizing of the "Multi-Faith" Service.
All are welcome: meet us Thursday Morning in our Meeting Room, entering through the front doors facing Washington Square Park, or the side entrance at 243 Thompson. We've created a "Support Committee," chaired by Juan-Carlos Ruiz (sanctuary69@gmail.com ), with John Merz (ascensionbrooklyn@gmail.com ), Michael Sniffen (michael.sniffen@gmail.com) and Nathaniel Mahlberg (namahlberg@gmail.com). Please reach out to any of them if you'd like to help them with coordination, or if you have specific support you can provide. No doubt the list will continue to evolve, but here's what we know we're looking for right now:
- Physical space to house people - even if you're not close to Zuccotti Park, let us know what you have available and what you can sustain (and whether or not you would need staff/volunteer help to sustain it).
- Physical space for storage (food, materials, etc. - on this one, closer is better) - Kitchen space (preferably industrial) to help cook meals - Laundry help - Shower facilities (even if you're not close, it's nice to know there are options people could travel to in shifts) - Buses/Vans (with or without Drivers) - Volunteers from your communities: off-site cooking, food "infrastructure," drivers (even bus drivers) to transport food, "housing" staff potentially people back and forth from sleeping sights, admin for all of the above. - Potential Ideas for all of the above. Who do you know? Who can you reach out to to help? NOTE: offering space (for housing, kitchens, etc.) does not necessarily commit you to the management of the space. We realize this is often the most difficult part, so if you are not able, we can provide staffing to help you.
Contact Us: email us at occupyfaithnyc@gmail.com with "support" in the subject line. Thanks for all your help, Michael Ellick & Juan-Carlos Ruiz

Sign-On Statement, Multi-Faith Support
of "Occupy Wall-Street"
| "We, the people of faith communities throughout New York and the United States, see in the spirit of Occupy Wall Street a promise of democracy renewed.
Our spiritual traditions are clear: the impoverishment of the many for the benefit of the few destroys us all. The cries of our people are clear: the American dream is compromised; the middle is slipping away; and in our politics, fairness is dissipating. The Soul of our Nation is threatened by many false idols.
So together we affirm the golden rule: do to others as you would have them do unto you. We commit ourselves to the restoration of justice for all in our economy, and compassion in our politics, that together we might behold a revolution of values for all our people. We ask all Americans to join us in this prayer, that once again our country might be the fulfillment of hopes and dreams for all who reach its shores."
