Walk This Way!

A Commuter Tip for Pedestrians and Drivers

Issue: 15

February 2012

Greetings!

This week's Commuter Tip comes in the form of a pop quiz, thanks to Bike/Walk Central Florida!

 Crosswalk at every intersection

Question: Which side of this intersection is considered a legal crosswalk where drivers must yield to pedestrians under Florida law?

Think of all those times you've been driving your car and seen people waiting to cross the street ... or those times you've been out for a walk and needed to cross the street ...

Answer: ALL sides are legal, enforceable crosswalks. Unless a driver has been granted specific permission to proceed - such as with a green traffic signal, drivers are required to yield to pedestrians at all intersections, whether or not a crosswalk is marked. Check out these traffic laws on the FDOT website here.

Park & Rides Throughout District 5

Mayor Pat Kelley Leads the Minneola Park & Ride Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Last month we celebrated the opening of the Minneola Park & Ride Lot in Lake County. This month, we'll be celebrating two Shared-Use Park & Ride lots in Deltona (Volusia County) and Mascotte (Lake County).

Shared-Use Park & Ride lots are a great way to expand the Park & Ride network without building new lots. Through partnerships with private property owners and municipalities, we can designate areas of already-existing parking lots as "carpool/vanpool parking."

Both the City of Deltona and the City of Mascotte have residents that travel well over 25 miles each way to get to work, which means there is the opportunity to save a TON of money by sharing the ride.

Please join us for these Ribbon-Cutting Ceremonies!
