Workplace Heroes
Issue: 8
Greetings!

One of the things that we're sure is on your mind is the price of gas. Whether you drive a car with great MPG or are behind the wheel of a gas guzzler, right now we're all hurting when it comes to filling up our gas tanks.

reThink Logo 2

While the price of gas may be out of our control, one thing we can control is how much gas we use. By finding a better way to work - like carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, or riding the bus - you can avoid the pain at the pump.

If you're already signed up to find a carpool/vanpool partner, check back in with us to receive an updated match list. Even if you did not have any matches when you first enrolled, we've increased our database, which means a better chance of finding your perfect match!Workplace Superhero

If you're already using an alternative mode to get to work, here's your chance to be a hero (or a heroine)!

Take a look around your office - do all of your co-workers know that they should be reThinking their commute, too? We encourage you to spread the word about what you're doing to save money on your commute and let people know that we're here to help!

Looking for a Bus in Brevard County? Just Google it!

Space Coast Area Transit LogoYou can now plan your trip on Space Coast Area Transit online at Google Maps. When you use Google Maps to plan a trip in Brevard County, you can select to travel "By Public Transit" from the menu options. Your Google map will then come up with the bus route that works for your trip, including showing the route on your map, displaying upcoming departure times, transfer points, and return trip options.

"Being placed on Google Transit is a huge accomplishment for us. It required a lot of effort and planning, but the end result was certainly worth it," said Jim Liesenfelt, Director of Space Coast Area Transit. "Google Transit is the best trip planner available on the market; there's no charge to Space Coast Area Transit and there's no charge to the user. Customers can access our schedules from anywhere on their mobile devices," he said. The Google Transit link can also be accessed on RideSCAT.com, where printable maps and schedules for each route are also available. Safe Routes Set Future Path

Ever wonder if there's a program out there helping school-aged children reThink the way they get to school?

There is - and it's called Safe Routes to School. This program focuses on our mini-commuters and making it easier - and fun! - to walk or ride their bicycles to school.

The purposes of the Safe Routes to School Program are:

  • To enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school;

  • To make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age; and

  • To facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools. Eustis Heights Elementary Bike Racks

A recent project in our District was to construct a sidewalk and install bike racks at Eustis Heights Elementary (check out the picture to the right).

For more information on this program, visit the Safe Routes to School website or send an email to Joan Carter, the FDOT District 5 Pedestrian/Bicycle Coordinator.
