People reThinking Their Commute - Riding the bus, Carpooling, Bicycling
Even better, now that the Commuter Tax Benefit has been extended, you could save even more money!

So - what is the Commuter Tax Benefit?

  • Your employer can allow you to set aside up to $230 a month pre-tax to pay for a transit pass or vanpool expenses. You and your employer save on payroll taxes!
  • Your employer can provide you with up to $230 a month tax-free to pay for a transit pass or vanpool expenses. You get the great benefit of getting to work for free, plus your employer gets a dollar-for-dollar tax deduction at tax time!
  • Your employer could allow for a combination of the two options above, providing you with a certain amount each month and allowing you to set aside the difference pre-tax.
  • Want to find out what vanpooling is all about? Check out the article below!
What's really exciting is that the SunRail project is moving forward! Once train service is up and running, your monthly train pass also qualifies under the Commuter Tax Benefit. For more info on SunRail, check out the article below or visit their website.

We hope that 2011 turns out to be a fantastic year for all of our reThinkers! If you have questions on your commute options, give us a call at 1-866-610-RIDE (7433) or send us an email.

SunRail will change the way Central Florida travels, starting with connecting DeBary in Volusia County to Sand Lake Road in Orange County. Thanks to recent developments, the goal is to have Phase I service up and running in 2013. This first phase will serve 12 train stations along 31 miles in Central Florida. Phase II is set for 2015 and will add an additional 30 miles of service and five additional stations.

VPSI & FDOT: Vantastic Partners!

To provide access to jobs, the Florida Department of Transportation has partnered with VPSI to create the Rural Vanpool Program. This program helps commuters who live or work in designated counties cover the cost of vanpooling to work.

Since the program's start last year, the program has helped get seven more vanpools on the road across the state. That's in addition to the hundreds of vanpools already in operation across Florida! If you live or work in Flagler County, you could qualify for the 60% subsidy provided by this public-private partnership.

Vanpool Group Sharing the Ride to Work

VanpoolingSo what is vanpooling? Vanpooling is a lot like carpooling: a group of co-workers or neighbors coming together to share the ride to work. The big difference between the two is that a vanpool is a group of commuters (typically 6-12 people) that lease a vehicle to use specifically for the commute to work.

These vehicles range from 7-passenger minivans to 15-passenger vans, and can be leased through either the local transit agency or a private provider, like VPSI. There is a monthly cost to use the vehicle, but that lease amount includes the cost of maintenance and insurance. The vanpool group plans their own route and sets their own schedule. In fact, it's actually the vanpoolers themselves who drive the van and take it home every night!

Vanpooling can help you save major bucks if you're driving more than 25 miles each way to work. From gas savings to saving wear-and-tear on your personal vehicle, vanpooling can save you thousands of dollars a year. Think that vanpooling might be for you? Send us an email to get started!
