Message from the President

 Fellow member:

Spring is nearly here and we have some terrific events coming up over the next few months. The Montage Mega Mixer on April 2 is expected to sell out, so you should reserve your spot ASAP by calling the Chamber office at 949-494-1018.  Members pay only $10 and non-members can come for FREE (if they sign up for membership that evening).  If a member brings a non-member who signs up for membership, we'll even let that member in for free (one per new member)!

Our Government Affairs is monitoring city committees and task forces to advance the interests of business in our city.  The Marketing committee is putting finishing touches on a new and improved Chamber web site and is planning a "learn in" on using social media like Facebook and Twitter.  Our Ambassadors are reaching out to members who may have an interest in participating in their Committee.

Your Chamber of Commerce participated in the Patriot's Day Parade, with Directors Gregg Abel and Gerry Perez leading the way.  Hats off to Wendy Potter for decorating the float and providing flag-waving enthusiasm.

Remember, this is your organization.  The Chamber is only as strong as its members want it to be.  The Board is open to your suggestions and is proud to serve our membership.  You can reach Board members through the Chamber office, and you can reach me directly via email at michael@kinsmans.com.

(March 8, 2012) The state Labor Commissioner has announced the creation of a Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) to target employers who perpetrate "wage theft."

Generally, "wage theft" is a phrase used to refer to infractions of the California Labor Code involving the payment of wages to workers. Wage theft might refer to employers who fail to pay for all hours worked, fail to pay nonexempt employees overtime, fail to pay minimum wage or fail to properly classify workers as employees and report them to the various state and federal agencies. Executive Director Report

GREAT NEWS!!! The Chamber of Commerce was awarded a one-time matching grant to jump-start our economic development efforts city wide!  The grant was awarded by the City of Laguna Beach and will allow the Chamber to do an inventory of commercial space, both vacant and occupied, conduct focus groups to come up with appropriate branding for their particular area of the city and then conduct promotional signature events that identify that particular area of the City.  I'm excited about this fantastic opportunity to generate more traffic to businesses city wide and ensure the Chamber is promoting ALL businesses in the City.  The grant will also provide for some badly needed technical upgrades to capture some never-before collected data.  Many thanks to the City Council for their unanimous support and to Council Members Elizabeth Pearson and Toni Iseman for their sponsorship!

If you would like to be a part of this exciting effort, or host one of the focus groups to be conducted, please contact me at the Chamber office (949) 494-1018 or via email at lagunabeachchamber@gmail.com.
