Michael Kinsman
Message from the President

 Fellow member:

Thank you for renewing your Chamber membership for

2012.  The Chamber is aiming high this year and hopes

to double its membership.  We are asking you to help

with that by urging businesses near you to join the

Chamber.  We will also be holding a special member-

 ship drive in March.

February has been a busy month.  The Open for

Business program on February 16 was very well

attended, which reflects optimism regarding the Laguna Beach business climate.  Open for Business is an

innovative City-Chamber program to allow those who are interested in opening a business to talk with local architects, city staff and planning commissioners to find out the reality of opening a business in Laguna Beach.  The next Open for Business meeting will be on April 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Suzi Q Center at 380 Third Street.

For those of you have asked about mixers this year, the Chamber will continue to hold major mixers on a quarterly basis.  In the intervening months, we will hold "Member Showcase" events to provide a way for businesses to target key potential customers or referral sources beneficial to their businesses.  Our first member showcase was a resounding success at Nancy Wilhelm's Starfish Laguna, a new Asian Fusion restaurant in South Laguna.  This event was characterized by many of our members as "just the right mix!.  I got a lot of benefit from this showcase."  Thanks to all who attended.  Here is just a sampling!

This is your organization.  The Chamber is only as strong as its members want it to be.  The Board is open to your suggestions and comments and is honored to serve our membership.  You can reach Board members through the Chamber office, and you can reach me directly by contacting me via email at michael@kinsmans.com.

Executive Director Report

Kthalman file photo

The Chamber of Commerce recently submitted a questionnaire to attendees at the Spirit of Laguna and Installation Event asking "what service, product or vision should the Chamber of Commerce consider going forward?"  The results were not surprising and the feedback was extremely useful.  Here is just a sampling...

"website needs updating"

"more outreach to youth"

 " use social media more"

"lead economic development"

"more marketing for Laguna Beach tourists"

"recognize the good that business brings to the local economy"

"be an advocate for new businesses"

"take better care of Broadway, first thing people see entering the city"

These are just a few of the comments.  So far, we are already making progress on many of the suggestions.  I look forward to these challenges and have a team that is committed to seeing a lot of these ideas come to fruition.

Our committees are moving forward and gaining momentum.  The Government Affairs Council is looking at a list of new goals and objectives to review and a system of reviewing the various City and County committee and task force agendas.  This will allow the GAC to be a more pro-active and responsive committee to our members and provide an "early warning" system to stay informed.  Our Marketing Committee will be sponsoring an updated Social Networking workshop on April 10 regarding how to create "buzz" for your business.  Another QR Code workshop is forthcoming, however we will be offering as a webinar and/or video seminar to make it more convenient for members.  Finally, the Environmental Committee is off to a good start with their first meeting taking place tentatively on the 4th Tuesday of the Month, starting in March.

Stay tuned for our Member Showcase events and of course, our first "Mega Mixer" coming up at the Montage on April 2 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Kristine Thalman,

Executive Director
