Information To Have Available When You File
When you begin the claims process, BP will ask for some basic information, including: - Name, address and phone number
- Social Security number or EIN (for a business)
- General description of your loss, including the nature of your business,
how the oil spill has affected your business and approximately how much
money you are losing. This is only an estimate; an adjuster will ask
for more detailed information later in the process.

Process
An adjuster should contact you once you have received a claim number, generally within 3-8 days. They will tell you what additional information is needed to process your claim. In some cases, you may want to submit more than one claim. For example, you may choose to file a separate claim for each month you have lost income.
While you are waiting to be contacted, we recommend you start gathering as much of the following as possible:
- 3-5 Years of tax returns
- Information about your business since the oil spill. For example, if you own a hotel, get information together about the number of bookings and cancellations you have for this period compared to the past 3 to 5 years.
If you already have a claim number and have questions about your claim, you may call (800) 573-8249 from 8 am to 8 pm, 7 days a week.
