Fair Trade Coffee is coming...and Chocolate!

Fair Trade Coffee Cartoon The Social Justice Committee will be selling Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee in multiple formats, as well as CHOCOLATE (at last!!)  in multiple formats on October 13th and November 9th, the second weekends of these months.  As I'm sure you know, this is a social action enterprise to help promote ways for small farmers in developing regions to have a fairer way of marketing produce in competition with the large multinationals.  We also can know that the labor for the production of these products is not exploited -- especially in the chocolate market. We have quality products for just a little more than mass-marketed coffee, and can feel virtuous and helpful as we sip.

Calling All People with Domestic Gifts

Are you able and willing to offer gifts of cooking (or purchasing prepared food), laundry, light housekeeping/chores or babysitting/pet sitting, etc. to members of our Community? If so, please contact Michelle Smith at attorneypastor@gmail.com or call 314.494.1457.

We will have a need among us the weekend of October 20-21, 2012.

Thanks in advance for your generosity of Spirit.

Social Justice Committee Book Study

November 3, 2012

December 1, 2012

4:00 pm

Fireside Room

The Social Justice Committee invites everyone to join us for our book study of The Hole in Our Gospel: What does God expect of Us? The Answer that Changed my Life and Might Just Change the World by Richard Stearns.

We will meet on the Saturdays above to discuss the book. It challenges us to embrace all of the gospel through the story of Rich Stearns, who discovered the full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to change his own life. He uses his journey to demonstrate how the gospel - the whole gospel - was always meant to be a world changing social revolution, a revolution that begins with us.  It is available from Amazon - new, used, or as a Kindle edition.

"An urgent, powerful summons to live like Jesus. Stearns weaves solid theology, moving stories, and his own journey of faith into a compelling call to live the whole Gospel. Highly recommended!"

--Ronald J. Sider, President, Evangelicals for Social Action,

Author of Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger

National Salesian Convention

November 2 - 4, 2012

The Visitations Sisters and Oblates of St. Francis deSales are hosting their first national "Every Day Spirituality 4 U: Holy Living through a Salesian Lens" convention here in St. Louis, November 2-4. I have attended many events through the DeSales Resource Center over the past years and can attest to the practical, nurturing lessons of Sts. Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. Francis was the first person to write a spiritual book specifically for the laity, "The Devout Life!"

The organizers of the convention told me that the convention will certainly be an affirming and nourishing place for progressive Catholics, so if you or someone you know is interested, please check out the flyer or go to the website:

http://www.desalesresource.org/conference/index.php

They are also willing to offer sliding scale scholarships and one day commuter fees by calling at 1.800.782.2270.
