Service Committee Book Study
October 6, 2012
November 3, 2012
December 1, 2012
4:00 pm
Fireside Room
The Service Committee invites everyone to join us for our book study of The Hole in Our Gospel: What does God expect of Us? The Answer that Changed my Life and Might Just Change the World by Richard Stearns.
We will meet on the Saturdays above to discuss the book. It challenges us to embrace all of the gospel through the story of Rich Stearns, who discovered the full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to change his own life. He uses his journey to demonstrate how the gospel - the whole gospel - was always meant to be a world changing social revolution, a revolution that begins with us. It is available from Amazon - new, used, or as a Kindle edition.
"An urgent, powerful summons to live like Jesus. Stearns weaves solid theology, moving stories, and his own journey of faith into a compelling call to live the whole Gospel. Highly recommended!"

National Salesian Convention
November 2 - 4, 2012
The Visitations Sisters and Oblates of St. Francis deSales are hosting their first national "Every Day Spirituality 4 U: Holy Living through a Salesian Lens" convention here in St. Louis, November 2-4. I have attended many events through the DeSales Resource Center over the past years and can attest to the practical, nurturing lessons of Sts. Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. Francis was the first person to write a spiritual book specifically for the laity, "The Devout Life!"
The organizers of the convention told me that the convention will certainly be an affirming and nourishing place for progressive Catholics, so if you or someone you know is interested, please check out the flyer or go to the website:
http://www.desalesresource.org/conference/index.php.
They are also willing to offer sliding scale scholarships and one day commuter fees by calling at 1.800.782.2270.

random sightings
wisdom...reflection...insight...amusement
Two men were walking along a crowded sidewalk in a downtown business area. Suddenly one exclaimed: "listen to the lovely sound of that cricket." But the other could not hear it. He asked his companion how he could detect the sound of a cricket amid the din of people and traffic. The first man, who was a zoologist, had trained himself to listen to the voices of nature. But he didn't explain. He simply took a coin out of his pocket and dropped it on the sidewalk, whereupon a dozen people began to look about them. "We hear," he said, "what we listen for."
