Join us for our Open House

Our underwriting campaign on KWMU is underway and our alternativecatholic.org site is live! As people begin to hear more about our faith community we strive to be present, hospitable and compassionate as they explore alternative Catholicism and Sts. Clare & Francis.

We are hosting an Open House at church on Saturday, September 8th, 3-4:30 pm. We need volunteers to help visitors find us, find information, and answer questions. We also need a few people who can provide snacks and drink. Contact MartyMichelle or Therese   to volunteer.  Set up will begin at 1:30.

Are You Ready for Some Fundraising???

This year our major fundraiser* will be a raffle with cash prizes of $200, $300 and a Grand Prize of $1000!!!  On the back of every $5 ticket is a coupon worth up to $8 at our sponsor's restaurant, C.J. Mugg's, in Webster Groves.  You come out ahead on this groupon and have a chance to win $1500 in prize money.  We're talking "no lose" here!  The drawing will be held on November 10, 2012.

Sunday Worship Opportunities

Some among us are unable to attend our Saturday night Eucharist once in a while.  Others are unable to do so at all.  Members of both groups want to know if something can be available for them on Sunday morning.  The Parish Council recently discussed several ways we can respond to this need, which we would like to share with you.

1. Michelle Smith, a seminarian in our community, has recently been hired as a part time chaplain at Ackert Park Skilled Care Community in University City.  She will be facilitating a Sunday morning worship service on the order of a Liturgy of the Word with a communion service at 9:00 a.m. beginning Sunday, September 16th at Ackert Park.   Ackert Park is located at 894 Leland Avenue in U. City, just west of Skinker and north of Delmar.  This opportunity has the feature of being able to worship with and create community with persons with disabilities.

2. Several small groups are forming this fall again.  At least one has expressed an interest in having a Eucharist in someone's home once a month on Sunday morning.  Jess and Frank are willing to do this for a period of time to gauge interest in having such a Eucharist on an ongoing basis.  This arrangement would feature a more intimate atmosphere but would be open to anyone interested in attending.  We'll keep you posted about this.

3. The council would like to form a team of interested persons to explore ways in the future of having a Sunday morning Eucharist on a weekly basis in a space dedicated to, or able to be set up for, worship.  Again this would not mean moving the current congregation to Sunday morning, but providing such a time and space for those who would be able to attend Sunday morning but not Saturday evening or who would prefer to attend on Sunday morning.  If you would be interested in being a part of a team to investigate these possibilities, please let someone on the Parish Council know.

The Service Committee invites everyone to join us for our book study of The Hole in Our Gospel: What does God expect of Us? The Answer that Changed my Life and Might Just Change the World by Richard Stearns.

We will meet on the Saturdays above to discuss the book. It challenges us to embrace all of the gospel through the story of Rich Stearns, who discovered the full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to change his own life. He uses his journey to demonstrate how the gospel - the whole gospel - was always meant to be a world changing social revolution, a revolution that begins with us.  It is available from Amazon - new, used, or as a Kindle edition.

"An urgent, powerful summons to live like Jesus. Stearns weaves solid theology, moving stories, and his own journey of faith into a compelling call to live the whole Gospel. Highly recommended!"

Road Trip to St. Jerome!

In November 1997, our sister community in Tulsa, Parish Church of St. Jerome, purchased its church building in the historic Brady Heights District. They have now paid off the mortgage and are planning a big celebration that will include burning the note on Sunday, September 30, 2012.
St. Jerome Logo

Bishop Rick is excited for the prospect of members of Sts. Clare & Francis joining in the festivities.  If you are interested in taking a road trip to Tulsa leaving Saturday, September 29 in the morning and returning in the evening on Sunday, September 30 after mass and fellowship, please contact Michelle via email at smithlegalministry@yahoo.com or call at 314.494.1457.  We will figure out travel and lodging as we confirm the number planning to visit.

This will be a wonderful time to get to know our brothers and sisters of St. Jerome's in general, as well as before the Synod. I hope you will join us.
