Get The Word Out
Let's get the word out about Sts. Clare & Francis! Given the current religious climate in our city and beyond we want people to know that there are alternative Catholic options in the St. Louis area. This month, the Parish Council approved a campaign for Sts. Clare & Francis that has multiple parts.
- An underwriting campaign on St. Louis Public Radio, KWMU, for late August, early September with the goal of greater name recognition. The announcements will highlight our Eucharist and an Open House that is being planned for early September. At the end of every announcement, people will be invited to visit alternativecatholic.org (see #2).
- With the help of Rob Krebs, we are building a new webpage, alternativecatholic.org, that will highlight our Eucharist and the Open House and make it easy to navigate to our webpage (www.stslcareandfrancis.org), donate, and connect with us. That website will go live in the next few weeks.
- With the help of Mike St. John, we are producing a short video for alternativecatholic.org that will highlight our distinctives and spirit. See the announcement below for more information on this project.
- An e-mail blast will go out during the later weeks in August. This is where you can help! When you receive it, forward the e-mail to friends and family, or post it on Facebook, Twitter, your blog. Not tech savvy? Talk up the church and direct people to alternativecatholic.org.
Have ideas, energy, or input about the campaign? Contact Jessica or Frank.

Videotaping at Mass this Weekend
A short video will introduce those who visit alternativecatholic.org to Sts. Clare & Francis (see previous article). Mike St. John has generously offered to produce it for us. He will be at Mass this Saturday, June 30, 2012 to tape parts of the Mass and interview a few people afterward. You may notice stands with small cameras set up around the church. They are small and should not be distracting. There will be instructions at the beginning of Mass on where to stand/sit if you prefer not to be on camera. Mike will be moving discretely for more dynamic shots, but rest assured that we will get permission from all faces that appear in the final video. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Jessica.

A Day of Reflection with Stefan Andre Waligur download a flyer
Saturday, July 28th
Sts. Clare & Francis
(Peace United Church of Christ) 204 E. Lockwood Avenue Webster Groves, MO 63119
Known as Macushla, an Irish term of endearment meaning "heartbeat of the Beloved," Stefan Andre Waligur is a contemplative, musician/composer, retreat leader and leader of new chant and kirtan around the world. After a life-changing visit to the Taizé community in France he began to write music in a similar style. Although akin to Taizé chants, these new chants incorporate American rhythms and harmonies, Celtic melodies and the call and response style of Indian raga.
Learn more by visiting: www.songsofpeace.net.
A donation of $25 is welcome. Send a check payable to Sts. Clare & Francis with "day of reflection" in the memo line to our office address (483 E. Lockwood Ave., Suite 3, Webster Groves, MO 63119) or drop a check in the basket that day.
Bring your own lunch or enjoy one of Webster Groves' many restaurants.

random sightings
wisdom...reflection...insight...amusement
My uncle Henry had a habit of leaving his fly unzipped, completely unzipped regardless of who might be available to notice. My mother, his sister, hated that. Henry's underpants were usually urine-stained, his shirttails hung out of the opening in his pants, and he had a propensity to yell "Shit" and spit for no apparent reason. Mom hated that, too.
And because Mother imagined that Henry's eccentric behavior was concrete evidence of his total disregard for others, especially his sister, my mother raised up a little hatred for Henry himself.
I don't think Henry ever noticed how much my mother despised him. ...
Henry's been dead now for well over thirty years, but my mother still gets angry whenever I mention his name. I don't understand that. Henry, I imagine, tried my mother's patience at times. But I'm certain he never intended to haunt her for three decades after his death. In fact, I don't think Henry intended much of anything, at least not toward the end.
My mother, though, is still tied to Henry, thirty-seven years after he cut his ties with everything and was laid to rest. And if you asked her today why she so despises Henry, my mother would tell you it is because he was dirty, and he was crazy. What she wouldn't tell you (but you might discern if you listened to her for a moment or two) is that she still believes if Henry had cared to, he could have stopped being crazy just as easily as he could have stopped being dirty.
