Michelle Smith to be "Student Pastor" at SCF!

Michelle SmithFor some time Michelle Smith has been  discerning a calling to be ordained a priest in  the ECC.  As part of that discernment process,  she is attending Eden Seminary to acquire her  M.Div., the professional degree that priests  and ministers are required to have.

One of the features of her program is to be a  "student pastor," a fourteen week program of 10 hours per week where the student gets a hands on experience of functioning pastorally. The Parish Council recently decided to fund this position.

Michelle will be supervised by Frank Krebs, and they are working out a covenant that will spell out Michelle's duties and SCF's responsibilities toward her.  We know she will be preaching more (and quite soon, on February 18th.)  Also, on February 25th we will have a formal commissioning of Michelle for this work.  Please cooperate with Michelle in this new capacity so that she has a rich learning experience among us!

Fireside Room

Bread Baking
and Eucharist with Children
Sunday, February 19, 2012
10:00 am
The Rowley Home

Communion bread

"Prayers and blessings can

be kneaded right into the dough and baked into every loaf.  Dedicating bread in this way focuses the baker's attention on its spiritual role as the sustenance of life."  Baking Bread with Children by Warren Lee Cohen, p 122

This event will combine story, song and blessing with the rich sensory experience of baking bread.  Children of all ages are invited to bring an adult and bake bread that we will then bless and enjoy in a simple Eucharist.  We will gather at Jessica Rowley's house on Sunday, February 19th from 10-11:30.  Please RSVP to Jessica by February 11th so we may have enough supplies for all (please include the number of children with their ages and number of adults).  Directions to Jessica's home in South County will be sent out the week prior.

Here We Grow Again!

SCF Growth

This graph gives a pretty good idea of what our growth has been since we began. It is based on when current members registered to be members of Sts. Clare &  Francis. (We have 133 members, but only 126 gave us a sign-up date, so the graph only shows us those 126 people.)

The blue line connecting the dots represents growth in members year by year. The red line represents the trend line over time. This trend line suggests 140-150 members by this time next year. This is just a two dimensional graph plotting numbers, but it manifests a growth that we did not give ourselves. It's something like looking at a sonogram. We did not do this by ourselves; this growth, which is both somehow of us and yet quite beyond us, is happening right before our eyes. I believe wonder and gratitude is the appropriate response. You?

Therapeutic Support Group for Lesbians

In Heterosexual Marriages & Coming Out

What: This is a therapeutic support group for married women or women who have been recently married to a man in a heterosexual relationship and are now coming out as lesbians or questioning their sexual orientation.

Married women are a significant but invisible part of the lesbian population who are often disregarded when it comes to providing resources and support. This therapeutic support group has been designed to address this disparity in resources and provide support and guidance so that individuals struggling with these issues do not have to exist in isolation but rather can begin to build their own supportive, rewarding and gratifying lives during this time of transition.

Who is eligible to participate? Any woman who is currently or recently been in a heterosexual marriage and is coming out as a lesbian or questioning their sexual identity.

Cost: Costs for participation in this group are $25 per session, per participant. Participants will be asked to contract for the full 9 weeks, and can pay in full prior to the group beginning or weekly if needed for financial reasons. Participants will also be required to pay an additional nominal fee for their individual screening session.

When: Weekly meetings on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8pm, starting February 9th, 2012 and running for 9 weeks. All meetings will be held in the therapist's office located in Webster Groves, MO.

Potential participants will be required to undergo an individual screening session with therapist prior to the 9 week therapeutic support group to determine therapeutic fit for the group.

Explore the interconnected nature of food systems and our relationships to them

Examine the impact our food choices have on our health and the health of our planet

Never Been A TimeNever Been A Time

Harper Barnes

Thursday, March 1, 2012

7:00 pm

St. Margaret of Scotland

Ever wonder how our region developed the racial divides and challenges that exist today?  The book Never Been a Time offers insight into a part of our region's history as it chronicles the tragedy of the 1917 race riots in East St. Louis.

You are invited to read an account of  this event and hear from the author himself.  We are so fortunate to have Harper Barnes, a former editor of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, author and columnist, to join us on March 1st, at 7:00 pm at St. Margaret of Scotland Church Hall, 3827 Flad, 63110 (corner of 39th and Flad) to discuss the book followed by questions and answers.

Left Bank Books will have the book for sale at a 20% discount at both their locations or you can order it from them on-line at http://www.left-bank.com/book/9780802715753.  You may pick it up or they will mail it.  Also, the City Library has 10 copies and the County Library does as well.  Please register for this free event by contacting  Gerry Rauch, 314.664.5770 or gerrauch@gmail.com

Compassion is hard because it requires the inner disposition to go with others to the place where they are weak. [...] What we desire most is to do away with suffering by fleeing from it or finding a quick cure for it. [...] And so we ignore our greatest gift, which is to enter into solidarity with those who suffer.
