Do you have friends who would like to know more about Sts. Clare & Francis?
Would you be willing to invite them to your house for an hour or so to hear about us? Frank is willing to come to your home to share the story of SCF with your friends.

We Tithe as a parish and we need your recommendations
We have committed to tithing as a parish. We donate 10% of all that we collect in our offerings to worthy causes. We do this as an act of faith, trusting that, in doing this, we will still be able to meet our financial needs. We have received a number of wonderful suggestions. Please continue to let the Parish Council know about worthy organizations that you would like us as a community to contribute to. Information needed: your name, name of organization you are suggesting, to whom check should be made payable, where to send check and to whose attention.  Please send your suggestions to
Marilyn Tenholder.

Matthew 25
The Matthew 25 Fund helps members in our community who need financial assistance. All information concerning the people with whom we work is held in the strictest confidence. If you would like to contribute to this fund, make your check payable to Matthew 25, and place it in the collection basket. If you would like to donate cash, put it in an envelope labeled "Matthew 25" and place it in the collection basket.  If you need assistance from the fund, you can contact
Peggy Montgomery

Fundraising
Do you shop at Schnucks?
Please keep our Schnucks E-Scrip fund raiser in mind when you shop.  If you don't already have an E-Scrip card, please call Marilyn Tenholder (314.323.1467) and she will get one to you. There is no charge and all you have to do is activate it by either a phone call or by going online.  Simply show the card when you check out and a percentage of your purchase cost will be rebated back to Sts. Clare & Francis. Thank you!

SCF Online Booksale
Please consider donating books to the Sts. Clare & Francis Online Book sale Fundraiser.  All proceeds, net of fees, will go to Sts. Clare & Francis.

We are looking for good quality new or used books on religion, spirituality, self-help, business, textbooks, cookbooks, psychology, books signed by the author and children's books.  We will accept books from other categories, too, but fiction (especially paperback) doesn't sell very well. You can bring your books to the weekly Mass on Saturdays at 5:00 pm or you can arrange for pickup by calling Art Maines at 314.518.1973. If you have questions about the sale or books you'd like to donate, you can call Art at the same number.

We have reinvested our KIVA microfinance loan.  A few years ago we received $500 as a parish tithe to make a microfinance loan with KIVA.  The loan has been repaid four times and we keep investing it.  You can do this, too, for as little as $25.

You simply go to www.kiva.org, set up an account, and pick an individual or group to whom you would like to make a loan.  You see a description and usually a picture of the loan recipient.

This is our latest loan:
Sixteen villagers from Thommoda village in Takeo province make up this village bank loan. Mrs. Aun Pov, born in 1979, is a village bank president who was selected by the other members who will also be using portions of the loan.

She is a farmer who owns a plot of land for cultivating rice to sell to support her family. Her husband, Mr. Yoeurn Yorn, is a palm-juice collector who sells sugar palm to support his family. He is also a construction worker.

They work a lot, but they can only earn a small income. So, to increase her family's income, Mrs. Aun Pov is seeking a loan to buy two piglets for breeding and pig food to start a new business. With the rest of the loan she will purchase fertilizer.

She is a mother of four children, one of whom is a laborer, while the others are enrolled in a local school and are helping their parents.
Urban Bike Ride

Sunday, September 19

All are welcome as SCF takes a leisurely 12 mile bike ride through the streets of St. Louis.  We will be following the route planned by OPENSTREETS STLOUIS, a community effort to encourage biking, hiking, etc. throughout the city.  All streets on the route will be traffic free from 8 a.m. -12 noon.  Here's your chance to see some great areas of the city up close and personal!

When:    9:45 a.m. Sunday morning

Where:   Entrance to Tower Grove Park at  Center Cross Road and Magnolia Avenue (near the Palm House)

The route winds through mid-town, ending on Chestnut downtown (6 miles). We return to Tower Grove Park by the same route in time for lunch somewhere in the Grove area (TBD).

Contact Paul or Sue Nauert for more info and to let us know who is coming.

Let's Spread a Virus!

I am going to be sending out an e-mail advertisement for SCF next week to this same mailing list.  It will be titled, "Help Me Spread the Word about SCF."  You can do just that by forwarding that email to as many people you can think of who may need or want to know about us.

Please be thinking, "Who do I know who would love to know about Clare & Francis?"  Then, when you get the
e-mail from me, please forward the ad.  This is all part of a campaign that we will be working between now and the end of October.

We owe a huge debt to Camille Adams, photographer Scott Ferguson, writer Sue Salzman, and all of the participants at SCF who let their feet be photographed!

Please, when you see the email, help us get the word out!  Thanks.

Celebrate Life!

September 25, after Mass

Somehow, I'm about to turn 70 on September 26th!!!  What an achievement.  I'd like to invite you all to help me rejoice in the life we share by staying after Mass on September 25th for a potluck dinner.  I'll be bringing cake, sandwiches and drinks.  If you'd like to add to the repast, please bring whatever you'd like.

In lieu of black balloons, we'll be collecting money contributions to add to our Clare & Francis KIVA microloans (see Service Committee article above), a wonderful gift to entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Thanks for helping me celebrate, you wonderful community, you.

Convocation on the Synod

September 25, 3 p.m.

What is a Synod?  What do we do at a Synod?  What are the big issues this year? Why is this important to SCF?  This year we have the rare oppotunity to experience the national ECC Synod in our own backyard (Oct. 27-30 at the DoubleTree Westport).  Come to this community-wide Covocation on Saturday, September 25 at 3 p.m. and get the low down on this upcoming event.

SCF Pastoral Plan
Your Input Requested

In the summer and fall of 2008, members of Sts. Clare & Francis held a series of meetings to develop a Pastoral Plan for the parish. The Plan was published in the winter of 2008. The plan is divided into four sections: 1. Decision Making Structures; 2. Community Designs; 3. Worship and Spiritual Development; and 4. Service Channels (Works of Justice and Compassion).

At its October meeting, the parish council will be reviewing Section 3 of the plan.

We invite your input. Does the plan need updating? Should anything be added, or removed from the plan? What are we doing well, and where are there opportunities for us to do better?

The third section, Worship and Spiritual Development, will soon be in the Forum section of the Sts. Clare & Francis website. To see it, go to:
http://www.stsclareandfrancis.org/site/forum/. (The Forum portion of the website requires you to log in. If you haven't registered yet, click the "Register" button and follow the instructions.)

Once you've logged in, scroll down and click on "Pastoral Plan 2010" to see the first section. You can then give your input by clicking "post reply" at the bottom, or send your input to any member of the parish council. Thanks!
