JL Fisher Barbeque
Annual Mixer Sponsored by Fisher, SOC, ICG, and ASC

On May 19th the SOC participated in another wonderful BBQ/mixer at JL Fisher. Members got to try out the latest equipment from many different suppliers on display in the parking lot. The SOC collaborated with Local 80 on a lively panel discussion including SOC camera operators and Local 80 dolly grips moderated by Bonnie Blake, SOC. The SOC Booth welcomed members and visitors and raised over $800 through the sale of raffle tickets for the Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

And when the raffle was over Jimmy Fisher wrote a check
for an additional contribution of $1,000 to the Vision Center!

Engineer David Cornelius explains his Alpha Stabilized remote head (a product of Geo Film Group) to the SOC Technical Standards Committee Chair, Dave Emmerichs, SOC at the ever popular 2012 JL Fisher, SOC, ICG and ASC annual mixer and BBQ. Notice the remote control thumb zoom control on the tilt wheel which enables the operator to control the zoom while operating the stabilized remote head. That gets a "thumb's up" from Dave!

At AFI

by Jennifer Braddock

Dave Frederick, SOC and a group of generous SOC operators and volunteers spent a busy day at AFI recently. With the help of AFI instructor Bob Primes, ASC the group gave cinematography students a good idea of what it is like to wear a Steadicam rig and move the camera through space.

Each student had an opportunity to don the Steadicam and work at length with an experienced Steadicam operator. Through some basic exercises the AFI students were able to appreciate the level of skill that is required to successfully execute an effective Steadicam shot.

Steve Fracol, SOC explained how important education is to the Society of Camera Operators and invited the class to join the SOC as Student Members.

Many thanks to the SOC operators and volunteers that made this day possible.

Jennifer Braddock

Off To Louisiana

"I first met Jennifer while I was directing my short film "Slick" in 2008. She was a consistently professional crew member every day of my shoot. She was so good as my film loader that I knew our images were in great and capable hands. Later when she became a member of the SOC she quickly became one of only a few super-capable volunteers who we could count on whenever needed. She will be missed here in Los Angeles, but I wish her luck in her ventures on sets in Louisiana."

President 2011-12/1995-96

Auburn Workshop
Mike Frediani Lead The Training
photos by Elson Ros

A sold-out camera operating workshop was presented by the SOC in Auburn, CA on June 23rd. Organized by our Northern California Active Members Al Gonzales, Hugh Litfin and Bret Allen the attending students received a full day of hands-on training utilizing a Panaflex G-II, Sony F35, Panahead, OConnor fluid head and the GearNex light weight geared head provided by Cinetoys. Held at Playground Studios and with assistance from CFAA (Capitol Film Arts Alliance) our event was deemed a smashing success.

Michael Frediani, SOC lead the training, putting the students through their paces with various camera setups that at first had them wondering if they could ever master the semi-complex shots--however with patience and guidance each attendee came away truly appreciating the job of the camera operator, and felt a sense of confidence and accomplishment at the conclusion of the day. Special thanks to Al for his organizing skills and Hugh for setting up the schedule and leading the panel (see photo) in an informative discussion of what we do on the set during our lunch break. None of this would have worked as smoothly as it did without the help of Rochelle Brown and Rachel Hudson our two prolific SOC volunteers, who prepped all of the equipment, drove it to Northern California and set up for the event! We plan to do similar events in other locales.

Working The Floor At NAB
SOC Board Signs Corporate Sponsors

In April the SOC was represented at the NAB Show in Las Vegas by SOC Board of Governors members Dan Turrett, Mark August, Mike Frediani, and Bonnie Blake. They participated in a panel discussion on the state of the industry's past, present and future.

The rest of their time was spent working the floor of the convention center, educating the attendees about the Society of Camera Operators and promoting relationships with potential corporate members. Corporate sponsorship is crucial to the survival and success of the SOC. With the support of our corporate members we are able to hold workshops, screenings, general membership breakfast meetings, events to raise charitable donations to the Vision Center and the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards.
