Greetings!

Welcome to the Spring 2012 issue of the SOC Newsletter.

We've had some very successful SOC events so far this year. The General Membership Breakfast Meeting In January saw the introduction of the new Arriflex digital camera which includes an optical viewing system. The meeting was informative and well attended.

In February we held the 2012 SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards and those that attended say it was the best awards presentation of the season. Congratulations to all the award recipients and especially to the producer of the show, David Frederick, SOC. Well done.

Please remember to support the official charity of the SOC, The Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. One easy way to do that is to purchase a commemorative SOC/Vision Center Pin. If every SOC member buys a pin ad wears it proudly on the set we will spread the word about both of these worthwhile organizations. It's easy to do. Just use the PayPal button in the left column of this newsletter under the picture of our new pin.

Clint Eastwood Honored

On February 19 at the Leonard Goldenson Television Academy Theater the SOC celebrated the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Awards. The event was a resounding success. The high point of the evening was Clint Eastwood accepting the SOC Governors Award from his long time camera operator Steve Campanelli, SOC.

Phil's children Kayla and Jeremy graciously and eloquently accepted the award on behalf of their father who was recuperating from a heart attack and unable to attend. The crowd responded with a standing ovation.

The SOC Letters Are For All Active Members, Please Use Them!
Especially In Your Screen Credit

SOC gold logo

We'd like to remind all Active members to use the "S.O.C." letters after your name, especially in your screen credit. Film and Television credits are some of the best ways to get the SOC name out there. When you fill out your start paperwork on a project don't forget those three letters "S.O.C." where it says "screen credit if granted". If you are a member of Local 600 the right to include this in your credit is actually part of the union contract.

"General Clauses Agreement dated Aug 1, 2009 paragraph 84, page 99 (b) Screen credit may be accorded to such other members of the camera crew as may be mutually agreed to by the Producer and employee. After the Camera Operator's name, the letters S.O.C. shall appear if so requested."

General Membership Meeting

Northern California SOC Meeting
Panel Discussion In Sacramento

On December 3 the SOC held a panel discussion in Sacramento for our Northern California members and others.

President Frediani appointed Northern California members Al Gonzales, SOC and Hugh Litfin, SOC to organize this event at the Studio Center courtesy of owner Frank Casanova. The event was sponsored by Joe Mendoza of GearNex, The Studio Center, California Film Arts Alliance and Joanna Mendoza of Malovos & Mendoza, LLP Attorneys at Law.

Frediani invited a distinguished panel that included Al Gonzales, SOC,  Hiro Narita, ASC, Tim Bellen, SOC, Doug Stanley (new SOC member) and moderator Hugh Litfin, SOC. The industry crowd and students totaled over 40 who paid a nominal fee to hear the panelists talk about everything from the state of the industry in small markets as well as the large ones based upon their experiences. They spoke of the favorite shots, most difficult ones and experiences working with directors, DPs and the equipment then and now.
