Greetings!

Welcome to the October issue of the SOC Newsletter. There are several important and exciting SOC events coming up. The first is our General Membership meeting at 10am on Sunday, October 30. It will be held in the Country House at the Motion Picture Health Center in Woodland Hills, California. See details below.

Early next year we will be holding elections for the SOC Board of Governors. Included in that ballot will be the proposed amendments to the SOC Constitution and Bylaws for approval by the general membership.

The SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards will be held in January next year (pending venue confirmation). Plan to attend this gala celebration as many of our guests say this event is the best evening of the entire awards season.

If you have an idea for a short article or interesting photos related to the SOC, please let us know. We welcome your contributions.

SOC General Membership Meeting at the Motion Picture Country House

Saturday, October 30, 10am

Motion Picture Country House

Woodland Hills, CA 91364

Please RSVP to soceventsrsvp@gmail.com

Our next General Membership meeting will be held on Saturday, October 30 at 10am at the Motion Picture Country House in Woodland Hills, California. This is a wonderful opportunity to share breakfast with fellow SOC members and guests. Catch up with old friends and meet new ones over eggs and pancakes. Please take some time to say hello to your board members and let them know what you're interested in. We need to know what you expect from the SOC and what you can contribute to this organization.

Try to find a committee you might enjoy working on. A lot of them run on just one member - the chairperson. They could sure use your help. Look over the list below and contact the committee chair either by clicking the email links below or seeking them out at the meeting.

And if you know someone who is interested in joining the SOC and wants to learn more about our organization please bring him along as our guest. Just RSVP to soceventsrsvp@gmail.com

Growth is the future of an active, vibrant organization.

Motion Picture Country House
Rich In Hollywood History

Did you know the building in which the SOC will hold its next general membership breakfast meeting is steeped in Hollywood history? Since its historical beginnings in 1940, many famous residents as well as those who worked behind the scenes have spent their twilight years here on these grounds.

Take some time before or after our meeting to stroll around the campus and soak up some of its rich history. You'll see familiar industry names on many of the buildings. If you have an opportunity, spend a few minutes wandering the halls of the Motion Picture Health Center to enjoy the collection of vintage photographs lining the walls.

Constitution and Bylaws
SOC Board Recommends Approval of Amendments

After several meetings the SOC Constitution and Bylaws Committee has proposed a series of amendments to update the document that describes this society. It had not been revised in almost 18 years and was sorely in need of change. Many of the proposed revisions deal with housekeeping issues such as making the wording gender-neutral, and correcting grammatical mistakes. Other more substantial changes are included in the areas of committees, membership, the SOC Awards, and a change in the number of board members from twenty one (21) to twenty five (25). If approved, one long awaited amendment will finally change our name from the "Society Of Operating Cameramen" to the "Society Of Camera Operators".

The committee presented its recommendations to the Board of Governors back in February of this year. The Board had some addtional changes to make and at the subsequent Board of Governors meeting in March, the revised amendments were approved for submission the SOC legal counsel for further scrutiny. After months of sorting out the legal details the amendments to the SOC Constitution and Bylaws have been finalized and approved by the Board of Governors for presentation the the General Membership.

Active members will receive a copy of the proposed amendments in their election materials which will be mailed out early next year. We hope to include these along with the Board of Governor election package. Members should be able to elect the new Board and vote on the Constitution and Bylaws Amendments all in the same mailing.

Thanks to committee chair Dan Gold, SOC, and committee members Dan Kneece, SOC, David Frederick, SOC, David Mahlmann, SOC, Jack Messitt, SOC, Bonnie Blake, SOC, Michael Chambliss, SOC and Mike Frediani, SOC for their hard work and thoughtful recommendations.

Giving the Gift of Sight
Vision Center is the Official Charity of the SOC

The Vision Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles believes every child deserves to see the sunset. Vision is a gift and the SOC's support of the Vision Center is unwavering. As a non-profit organization, the SOC makes a yearly donation to the Vision Center to help underwrite the cost of contact lenses for their patients in need. Your membership and participation in SOC fund-raising events helps support this worthwhile cause.
