Golf Fitness

We are excited to tell you about our golf fitness program at our Blue Ash Center!  Utilizing the Titleist Performance Institute evaluation, we evaluate your strength, stability, flexibility, balance, and coordination and identify how limitations in these areas affect your golf swing.  From there, we can begin to instruct you on the proper types of exercises to address your specific deficits.

Some might ask how is golf fitness different than your ordinary workout?  Well, your body is composed of many segments much like a chain.  Being able to identify which links in the chain are problematic as well as prescribing the appropriate exercise is crucial for enhancing your golf performance.  In addition, the golf swing places increased stress throughout the body increasing risk for injury.  By addressing deficits early and properly, you can greatly reduce this risk.

Brian Adkins, MPT, CSCS, CGFI, is who you will work with directly throughout your program.  Brian received his masters in physical therapy and is also a Titleist Certified Golf Fitness instructor and an HSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  Brian has had golf fitness patients for the past few years and they have seen great results.

Patient Doug Groh said the following about the golf fitness program, "After spending significant time and money on golf lessons over the past five years and no longer improving, one of the golf teachers suggested that I look into personal training for golf.  After spending only two months working with Brian Adkins at Oxford Physical Therapy, I have seen significant improvements in flexibility, balance, and stability.  This has allowed me to make a proper swing and has increased both the distance and accuracy of my shots."

Golfers of all ages and skill levels can benefit from the golf fitness program.  The golf fitness program focuses on both improving performance, as well as preventing injury.  Each golfer's program is individualized and depending on your time, goals, budget, access to equipment, and fitness level, we will design a program that meets your needs.

Cross Training

Cross training is the idea or concept of participating in an exercise or sport other than your normal exercise routine or sport.  This can be important and extremely beneficial for a number of reasons.

The first reason is cross training allows you to strengthen and condition a different set of muscles or muscle groups other than the ones focused during your normal exercise routine.  As you stick to or focus on one routine for an extended period of time, your body becomes very efficient with performing these activities and movements.  This will ultimately lead to a physical "plateau", where you will maintain your current level of fitness and limit your ability to further improve your overall fitness level.   The variation and change in the way your body performs during different activities with cross training allows you to strengthen non-emphasized muscular groups, which are not normally stressed during your normal routine.  This will reduce the "plateau" effect, limit exercise boredom and the sense of burning-out, and allow you to improve your overall fitness level throughout the entire body.

Another very important benefit of cross training is its ability to reduce the risk of injury.   When performing the same exercise routine for many months, the same joints, bones, and muscle-tendon structures undergo repeated stress and run the risk of overuse injuries.  These injuries, such as stress fractures and chronic tendonitis for example, can significantly inhibit performance and prevent you from improving your fitness level.  Adding variation to you typical routine will reduce this stress to overused structures and limit the risk of injury.  Similarly, if you happen to be currently suffering from one of these injuries, cross training may give you an alternative to continue exercising without stressing these overused structures.

With fall season upon us, weather could be a factor at preventing you from exercising on a routine basis outdoors.  This is an opportune time to incorporate cross training into your fitness routine.  If you enjoy running outdoors, consider participating in other indoor activities when the weather is bad.  Some examples would be swimming at your local recreation center, playing court sports such as basketball and racquetball, and resistance exercise.  You could also consider joining different classes such as zumba, boot camp, and spinning.

Overall, cross training is a great way to help reduce the risk of injury and improve your overall fitness level!

As always, we are here to help you maintain your active lifestyle.  All of our centers offer free injury screens.  If you or someone you know are not feeling 100% we would welcome the opportunity to meet with you.

Best,
