Season's Greetings! We hope that you are enjoying the holidays and are staying warm as we enter into the winter months!

 

This month's newsletter features our Florence Clinic, which is one of our 3 clinics that are located in Northern Kentucky. In addition, there is a segment on arthritis if you or someone you know is suffering from arthritis. We have put together a list of different exercises and goals to help you reach full recovery.  We have also included some tips on skiing and snowboarding safety to ensure your safety on the ski slopes this winter.

Matt Ernst, PT, MPT, OCS is the clinic manager at our Florence Clinic, located at 430 Meijer Drive in Florence, Kentucky. Matt is also a partner at Oxford Physical Therapy. Matt received his undergraduate and master's degree at the College of Mount St. Joseph. Matt is an adjunct faculty member at the College of Mount St. Joseph and is also a consultant for the Cincinnati Bengals.

 

Dave Feeley, PT, MPT is one of many physical therapists at the Florence Clinic. Dave is a member of the American and Ohio Physical Therapy Association. Sarah Loreaux, PT, DPT provides patients with top-notch care at the Florence Clinic. She received her doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Kentucky. Katie Yeager, PT attended the College of Mount St. Joeseph for both her undergraduate and masters degrees.  All of the therapists at our Florence location are always growing their knowledge base by attending various continuing education courses to provide patients with the highest quality of care.

 

The Florence team also consists of Judy, Karen, and Julie at the front desk, along with PT Aids: Codi, Jodie, Emily, Katie, and Meredith.

Arthritis


 

Arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in the US, effecting approximately 46 million people above the age of 18. There are over 100 forms of arthritis and each have a variety of causes, symptoms, and treatments. Research has shown exercise to be one of the best ways to help manage arthritis. Exercise for arthritis patients can help to protect joints from further damage, keeps joints aligned, decrease stiffness, and minimize pain.

 

Goals for exercise for arthritis patients include:

  • Increase flexibility and maintain range of motion which helps maintain normal joint movement and relieve stiffness
  • Increase strength to help strengthen muscles around the joint which helps improve stability at the joint
  • Improve endurance to help improve cardiovascular fitness, control weight, and improve overall function. Weight control is important for arthritis patients to decrease the stress put on to joints

Exercise should be performed at a low to moderate intensity to keep the stress on the joints low. Types of exercises that have been shown by research to be safe for arthritis patients include:

  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Aquatic exercise
  • Pilates
  • Yoga

When beginning exercise, it is important to start slow, choose exercises you enjoy, and select the proper equipment. A physical therapist can help to develop a personalized workout routine that will help to accomplish the goals listed above. Research for the treatment of osteoarthritis has shown that adding just a small number of clinical visits to a physical therapist for manual therapy including manual stretching and soft tissue mobilization as well as supervised exercise has shown a greater symptomatic improvement and decrease in medication use in arthritis patients. Skiing/Snowboarding Tips
Once there is snow on the ground, many of you are going to want to go out and go skiing and/or snowboarding! Many injuries occur on the ski slopes, so we have provided a few ski safety tips that you can follow in order to help prevent an injury this winter.
  • Warm up properly; take a few minutes to stretch prior and after hitting the slopes
  • Begin each new ski day with a slower run to familiarize yourself with your equipment
  • Do not overstate your skill level when renting equipment- ski length and binding tension are skill dependent
  • Recognize when you need a rest- Most injuries occur after lunch or when fatigued
  • Never ski/board out of bounds alone
  • Never ski/board down closed routes/runs
  • If you need to fall, please keep in mind the falling forward technique:
    • Keep arms tucked into your sides with fists tight to reduce the risk of shoulder dislocation
    • Use your forearms to absorb the impact of the fall
    • DO NOT use an out stretched hand
