If you're an avid sports fan, chances are you've experienced some aches and pains from sitting in stadium seating or standing for long periods of time. We'd like to provide you with some tips on staying pain free while routing for your team.
1. When possible, sit in a seat with back support. Seating without back support (like bleachers) offers less support for your spine, frequently resulting in poor posture and eventually back pain. If bleachers are the only choice and you sit in them frequently, investing in your own cushion (some even come with a back) could help reduce the likelihood of pain.
2. Avoid maintaining one position for too long. Don't wait for the seventh inning stretch to give your body a break! Every 30 minutes to 1 hour, stand, stretch, and even go for a short walk. This can reduce loading to the spine and other structures, preventing stiffness and pain.
3. If you are standing on the sidelines watching a game, reduce the load on your spine by contracting your transverse abdominals, a part of your core which work as your own internal back brace. To do this, pull "in and up" with your belly button. You should not have to hold your breath. Building endurance in these muscles is the goal, so work on this task as frequently as possible.
4. Chose the right foot wear. You'll want to make sure your arch is supported, especially if you plan on standing a lot, as it will translate to better support for your entire body. Athletic shoes are ideal, but any with adequate arch support will give you that stable base you need.
