| FTC Delays
"Red Flags Rules" Deadline Again, Until December 31, 2010
| |
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has delayed the compliance
deadline of the Red Flags Rule until December 31, 2010. With this extension, MSDC will be working with the AMA and other national societies to convince the FTC and Congress to amend the rule
to exempt physicians from this additional requirement. MSDC has joined with the American Medical Association and American Osteopathic Association in pursuing legal action against the FTC over the "red flags rules."

US Senate Addresses Medicare Payment Cuts Today
|
When senators return from their vacations today, June 7, they will be considering a proposal to temporarily patch the
Medicare cuts once again - this time for 19 months. The new proposal
being considered by Congress would provide payment updates of 2.2
percent for the remainder of 2010 and an additional 1 percent increase
in 2011. However, in 2012 the SGR formula will once again go into
effect and payments will be cut by an estimated 33 percent! Congress
needs to hear from you! Call your representative and senators today
using the AMA's toll-free grassroots hotline at (800) 833-6354 and then
send an email using the form found here. Urge them to end their
mismanagement of these important health care programs, and honor their
commitment to military families and older Americans

Version 5010 of the HIPAA Transactions Begin January 1, 2012 - Start Early!
|
Version 5010 of the HIPAA transactions will be required for
use by physicians on January 1,
2012. Version 5010 corrects technical issues, accommodates new business
needs and provides overall improvements from the current 4010 version. Physicians who
currently conduct electronic administrative transactions, such as
checking a patient's eligibility, filing a claim, or receiving a remittance
advice, either directly with a health plan payer or a clearinghouse, will need
to be prepared to send and receive only the 5010 version of the HIPAA
transactions starting on the compliance deadline. The AMA has various resources to help physicians implement the 5010 HIPAA
transactions. This flier will help you start preparing today to prevent future
cash flow interruptions and disruptions in transaction processing.

How Reform Law Integrity Provisions Impact Your Practice: What You Need to Know and Implement Now
| The Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education
Reconciliation Act, signed into law by President Obama, contain a number of key
provisions intended to increase the government's ability to:
- Ensure only legitimate health care providers and suppliers are enrolled in
federally funded health care programs
- Reduce improper payments
- Curtail activities that undermine the financial integrity of Medicare,
Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
The enrollment, referral and ordering, and payment provisions in the new law may
have an immediate impact on your practice and your patients. The AMA is actively
seeking clarifications from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on
how it intends to implement these provisions.

CDC Health Alert: Potential Contamination with
Certain Intravenous Metronidazole, Ondansetron, and Ciprofloxacin
|
The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) is alerting healthcare professionals not to use certain
intravenous (IV) bags of metronidazole, ondansetron, and ciprofloxacin because
of potential contamination. FDA has received reports of floating matter in IV
bags manufactured by Claris Lifesciences Limited, in Ahmedabad, India.
Microbiological analysis identified the matter in one of the bags as a
Cladosporium mold. Molds of this type can cause infections in
susceptible patients, such as immunocompromised individuals. At this time, FDA
is not aware of any reports of injuries due to administration of these products.
Affected products include any metronidazole, ondansetron, and ciprofloxacin
manufactured by Claris Lifesciences Limited and sold under the following labels:
Claris, Sagent Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, West-Ward
Pharmaceuticals.

The Society Welcomes Residents from George Washington University and Georgetown University Hospitals
|
Through the Graduate Medical Education departments at George Washington University and Georgetown University, the Medical Society of DC welcomes over 500 active and capable residents to the organized medical community in the District. We are a strong
voice representing physicians in training and in practice, and this wonderful addition is testament to the possibilities of each physician at every stage of their career. As a Society, we work to improve professional satisfaction and to
increase the health of our District by following three key elements: - Serve, then lead-We will serve our
members and our community through all means available, and any required; our
example will be how we encourage others to do the same.
- Connect Physicians and
Patients-Physicians are the recognized experts in medicine, and must be
available to expertly discuss their profession with colleagues and with their
patients.
- Support Practices-Members need the
competitive edge that can only be provided through Society membership; without
the ability to sustain their practice, they cannot serve their patients. The
Society has a responsibility for affordability to members and their patient.
So, welcome to your Society, from each Society to member to all of our new members from George Washington University and Georgetown University.
