 * Medicaid Update*

 In last month's newsletter, Janna Dutton discussed some of the issues in the process to implement the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA), which will modify the Medicaid program.

Effective January 1, 2012, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services ("Department") will implement extensive new rules affecting eligibility for long term care Medicaid coverage, namely, coverage of nursing home care, Supportive Living Facilities (Medicaid covered assisted living), and the Community Care Program (in-home services).

Just a reminder, Medicare beneficiaries have until December 7 to enroll in, or change, Medicare D coverage.

*Communicating End-of-Life Wishes Pays Off Where Aggressive Treatment   

Is the Norm  *

A new study finds that, when medical personnel know what kind of care a patient wants at the end of life, Medicare can be spared significant sums and the patient is more likely to die at home rather than in a hospital, at least in certain areas.
