Janna Dutton Authors Article on Status of Estate Tax
Dutton & Casey, P.C. partner Janna Dutton authored an article titled, "Congressional Inaction and Your Estate Plan."

The estate tax - a tax on the assets left by a person who has died - lapsed on January 1, 2010 as Congress was unable to agree as to how or whether it should continue. As a result, the heirs of billionaires who died in 2010, for example, George Steinbrenner, have received huge inheritances without tax.  However, without agreement in Congress, on January 1, 2011, the estate tax will return in a big way.  The estates of persons dying with more $1,000,000 will be taxed at the highest rate in 10 years, with a tax rate of 55 percent. Those with assets worth less than $1 million at the time of their death will be exempt.

Erin's Corner: Scams

It really goes without saying that we are living in a fast-paced society. Some of the fastest changes are occurring in the health care, health insurance, technology and

financial industries. Sadly, with change can come scams.

Last week, I  attended the Elder Rights/Triad Conference, sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging and State Triad. At this conference advocates for older adults, including members of law enforcement and the social services world, came together to learn about how we can help protect the welfare and safety of older adults.

Scams are on the rise and one of the many resources I learned about was a program, through the Secretary of State, that deals with regulation of the securities industry in Illinois. Their website contains a great deal of helpful information, and I encourage you to visit it.
