 Elder Law Update:

May 2010

The mission of our newsetter:
Elder law is constantly evolving.  The attorneys at Janna Dutton & Associates understand the importance of staying informed within this expanding field of law.  Now, with the recent addition of our Care Advocate, Erin Vogt, we understand more than ever how crucial it is to address the complexity of our clients' needs.  Be sure to check out "Erin's Corner," a new component to our monthly newsletter.  "Erin's Corner" will cover a variety of topics concerning Life Care Planning and Care Advocacy.

Our newsletter was designed with you in mind and includes articles and links below that help highlight some of the most recent developments in elder law and Life Care Planning.  Staying informed can make a difference in how we plan for inevitable changes and how we react to sudden ones.

Erin's Corner

With the start of summer, many people are looking for some "down time."  Kids are out of school; the weather is warmer; pools are open; travel can be easier with no snow on the roads (let's not mention the road construction!); not to mention the three upcoming summer holidays.

Erin Vogt, Care Advocate at Janna Dutton and Associates.

However, for family caregivers, there probably is no down time.  For many, the need for the family care-receiver to have care, advocacy, and assistance knows no season.

What about the family caregiver???  Family caregivers also need to have care (maybe of a different nature than our loved ones), advocacy, and assistance, regardless of the season.

The National Family Caregivers Association is an association that I recommend we all be involved with!!!

"The National Family Caregivers Association educates, supports, empowers and speaks up for the more than 65 million Americans who care for loved ones with a chronic illness or disability or the frailties of old age. NFCA reaches across the boundaries of diagnoses, relationships and life stages to help transform family caregivers' lives by removing barriers to health and well being."

If you are a professional, be a professional member. If you are a family caregiver, join (for free) and make sure you and your efforts are recognized. For information and membership, please go to http://www.nfcacares.org.

Also, make sure to continue to read our e-newsletter and blogs to stay current on programs, resources, national and local advocacy efforts, and much more.  And, remember that I am here to assist you and am honored to do so.

Steps to Take in Advance of Death or Disability

stepping stonesNo one wants to face the fact that our loved ones will not be with us forever. Facing our own mortality is frightening as well. Although none of us wants to contemplate a time when we or a loved one might become disabled or die, it is important to be prepared.

Powers of Attorney Come in Different Flavors

A power of attorney is a very important estate planning tool, butall firm photo in fact there are several different kinds of powers of attorney that can be used for different purposes. Before executing this crucial document, it is important to understand what your options are.

Book Review: Circles of Care: How to Set Up Quality Home Care for Our Elders

Circles of CareMost seniors, given a choice, would prefer to remain at home rather than go to a nursing home. This book, by a caregiving consultant, explains how to provide quality care for seniors in their own homes.

Getting Medicare While Traveling or Living Overseas

suitcase with stickersMany retirees look forward to traveling in their retirement, and more and more are actually retiring to another, often less expensive, country. But what happens to Medicare coverage while traveling or living in another land?

Social Security Adds New Online Medicare Application

internetTime was when Medicare eligibility and one's full retirement age for Social Security were both 65, but that's no longer the case. The Social Security Administration has just launched a new service that allows people to enroll online for their Medicare benefits even if they are not yet ready to file for Social Security benefits.
