Dear MiNDS students & faculty,
I am pleased to invite you to attend a MiNDS Seminar talk TOMORROW Tuesday February 28th at 3:00 in HSC 4E20. Bring your coffee cup for coffee and cookies before the talk at 2:45. Dr Dawn Eagle is a Research Associate in the University of Cambridge Department of Experimental Psychology and Behavioural and Clinical Neurosciences Institute, working with Professor Trevor Robbins. They are interested in how the brain controls impulsive and compulsive actions and stops inappropriate or unwanted behaviour. This question is relevant to many illnesses where brain function is altered (e.g,. ADHD, Parkinson's disease, OCD, schizophrenia, compulsive gambling, eating disorders and drug addiction).
Dr Eagle is working on rodent models of cognition that translate directly with human cognitive tests in the clinic, in order to study the neural circuitry and pharmacology of inhibitory failure. This systems-based approach should improve the development of treatment strategies in ways that that might not otherwise be possible or practical from studies of patient populations alone.
Dr Eagle will give an overview of the neural circuitry and pharmacology underlying behavioural inhibition, in particular using the example of stopping in the stop-signal task. She will discuss how this is relevant for the treatment of patient groups, focussing in particular on ADHD and OCD. She will also present some of their more recent work to develop new cognitive models of compulsive disorders, in particular a model of cognitive aspects of checking behaviour. We look forward to seeing you all at the talk tomorrow.
