December 2010
Welcome to RiverQuest Charters/Muskegon River Lodge

Greetings!

Happy Holidays from all of us at RiverQuest Charters and Muskegon River Lodge! December is here and with it the perfect time and  place to reflect on the holidays. Fishing pressure is nil, and the steelhead are waiting for your swung fly!

Muskegon River Lodge

As the calendar changes from November to December, visions of snow-covered trees and river banks lift our spirits in anticipation of that get-away to warm one's soul and reflect on another year rapidly coming to a close. A soothing soak in the hot tub beneath December stars or a steam in the sauna after a day of fly fishing for steelhead affords the Muskegon River Lodge guest relaxation one is hard-pressed to rival.

December also brings gatherings of close family and friends, and what better place to celebrate than on the banks of the Muskegon River? Winter sports, fly fishing for steelhead, or late season pheasant hunts give your guests plenty of opportunities to stretch the legs and breathe the crisp Canadian air now so prevalent. Settle into the warmth of the lodge and savor a holiday feast you've prepared or an extraordinary dining experience created by our Muskegon River Lodge chefs.

Don't miss December at the lodge; it is sure to please! For information or reservations at the lodge please visit our website or call 616.293.0501. To download a pdf sample of the menu choices at the lodge follow the link

Finally, why not give that special someone a Christmas gift they'll never forget? An escape to the Muskegon River Lodge or a float trip with RiverQuest Charters.  Better yet; why not both?  Gift certificates are available by simply calling Steve at 616.293.0502.

December on the Muskegon River-the choice runs and pools are now void of fishermen since most have decided to turn their attentions to more important things like shopping at the mall with the wife, vegging in front of the tele, or reminiscing about fish and rivers past.  We all do it, but lost on us too often is the fact that chrome steelhead now cruise their favorite tail-outs looking for that sculpin that for moment lets it guard down. Water temperatures have cooled, but swung flies continue to bring quality fish as the steelhead prepare to settle in for winter. Nymphed flies produce fish as well, but the sense of accomplishment taking a steelhead on the swing is truly special.

Not an accomplished spey fisherman?  No worries; one of the RiverQuest Charters guides will patiently teach you and get you on the road to success with a two-handed fly rod!

Indiana On The Fly 2011
The first fly fishing show of the 2011 season is nearly upon us and is presented by Patti Beasly and Reel Women and Reel Men of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Each year this show continues to grow in attendance and in the national stature of featured presenters. This year, among other fly fishing experts, the show presents April Vokey of British Columbia and the flies that she fishes on the classic steelhead waters of her native land.  Spectacular scenery, world class steelhead fishing, specialty flies, and the tips and tricks April employs to bring chrome to hand promise to make her presentation most memorable and useful, particularly to Michigan's burgeoning cadre of Spey fishermen (and women).

RiverQuest Charters and Muskegon River Lodge share booth space at this first show of the season. If you've never attended a fly fishing show, give this one a try.  You'll be glad you did, and be sure to stop and chat with Steve, Dave, Don, and Tom-the entire RiverQuest crew.  For information regarding the show, please follow the link.

Book Review By Glen Blackwood

Book Review By Glen Blackwood

Fly fishing tales come in many forms. Some are river-spun yarns that develop and intensify every time the tale is told.  Some are long drawn out affairs with hidden meanings, much like a King's upstream run to spawn and expire.  Some are just concise and fun to read.  This month's review is one of these.  Fools Paradise is a book by fly fishing's preeminent author, John Gierach.  Mr. Gierach has written over a dozen books and countless articles over his writing tenure. With titles like Trout Bum and Sex, Death and Fly-Fishing his books have caught the eye of many an angling reader.

Fools Paradise is a title that may catch your eye as well as it did mine.  This 19 chapter, 203 page book is published by Simon & Schuster and retails for $24.00.  Each chapter is interestingly illustrated by Michigan artist, Glenn Wolff.   Mr. Wolff's, black and white sketches add character to each chapter.

While on the topic of chapters, I enjoyed his chapter entitled "Pike."  I enjoy fishing for big toothy

critters with flies and have chased them in the upper Midwest and Canada. The author enjoys them as well and writes a tale of fishing for them by happenstance. In fact, some of the best fishing tales are birthed this way.  He penned a fun chapter called "Steelhead" that is based out west but the words will ring true to the Muskegon River angler.  The chapters are not just based on species of fish but also on friendship, flies, camp dogs, and flowers.  Each chapter will take you on a trip that gives the reader not only humor but insight into fly fishing and our sporting character.

A fool's paradise certainly is not an exact place but is one that we all may have stumbled across in our days afield. To some it may be a small brook trout creek, to others a long steelhead run, but to John Gierach, Fool's Paradise is a book that will lead you into the water and to fish in the long winter ahead.

Enjoy the holidays!
