June 2010
Welcome to RiverQuest Charters/Muskegon River Lodge

Greetings!

June is here and with it the season's best opportunity to enjoy Michigan's dry fly fishing! Then, too, be sure to look ahead to what July has to offer close to home and remember to support our affiliates-your local fly shops-as you travel this summer

Muskegon River Lodge
As the grey drake rests on the exterior wall of the lodge, lodge guests find themselves entranced with the beauty and relaxation afforded by the grounds of the lodge. An afternoon spent on the lower lodge river deck looking at the crystal, clear-flowing waters of the Muskegon River brings with it a peace that can't be understood until you find yourself in that very spot.

Fly fishermen will find the river to be at its best during the month of June. Golfers, too, with our affiliate course, Pilgrim's Run, will find it to be in the best shape of the season with lush green fairways and rough. Kayaker's looking to experience one of Michigan's most peaceful rivers will find our low-bank access most enjoyable for and afternoon paddle.

Consider joining us this month for some relaxation on the banks of the Muskegon River. For more information regarding your stay or pehaps information on our affiliate activities, please visit our website.

RiverQuest Charters
It is June and the hum of winged grey drakes and Isonychia fill the faded skies with a symphony of sounds only a fly fisherman can appreciate! The Muskegon River as predicted is producing some of the best rainbow and brown trout fishing ever to date! Pictured above is a 25" brown that RiverQuest Charters Captain Don Graham nymphed from a likely glide last Friday, the 28th of May.

The next three to four weeks will likely produce our best dry fly fishing opportunities of the year! Blanket hatches of grey drakes, and the much sought after Isonychia will have the big trout looking up. Early afternoon risers will be taking size #16 caddis, #14 sulphers, and size #18-20 blue winged olives. With dates still available, don't let this season's best dry fly fishing pass you by! For information on how you can join us, drop us a note or call 616.293.0501.

July Done Right
Wondering what to do in July when the mayflies are winding down on your favorite trout haunt? You can always head West for a week or two on your favorite spring creek, but maybe you should really hang a little closer to home!

Let RiverQuest Charters introduce you to the ever-magnificent Atlantic salmon! Michigan boasts a growing population of the "king" of sport-fish, coursing the waters of the St. Mary's River, an easy drive from every major metro area bordering Michigan.

These Atlantic salmon, stocked in cooperation with Michigan's DNR and Lake Superior State University, provide summer fly fishermen and opportunity close to home to nymph fish these extraordinary fish.

Wondering why you haven't heard about this great summer opportunity? Probably because people like me have kept it pretty hush-hush!

To read more about the fishery, visit our website link to the article in Midwest Fly Fishing Magazine, written by Bob Linsenman, Titled " A Budget Ransom for the King", the article recounts two days of Atlantic salmon fishing with yours truly. My only reservation is that its tale of two spectacular days of fly fishing for Atlantic's might lead fishermen to expect everyday to match the success Bob and Dr. Smith enjoyed. Rarely are we blanked, but know that Bob and Dr. Smith had two out-of-the-park days. Please drop us a note for further information for how you can join us this summer!

Sporting Literature Review
Sorting Literature Review

When it comes to angling writing, books and stories are full of catch phrases, puns and trite lines.  Writers use them to lure anglers into their tales. Sometimes they work well, but most of the time they fail like five year-old 6x.  I hope you're getting my drift.

The phrase "hook, line, and sinker" falls into this category.  A common phrase, this word play led me to great disappointment as a boy.  One rainy Saturday afternoon I thought I was going to pass the time away by watching a two-hour fishing show.  I certainly was not expecting the wacky ways of a Jerry Lewis movie.  To this day, those four words cause anxiety.

Thus, when the title " Hook, Line & Sinister" came across my desk I was  wary.  The title was another play on words.  The next line on the dust jacket was "Mysteries to Reel You In,"  more of the same.  The following line did catch my attention: "16 Original Stories."

I like not only the word original but all things original. In a world where everything is rehashed in a 30 minute news cycle, original things are harder and harder to find, but "Hook, Line & Sinister offered 16.   I flipped the hardback over to read the names of 16 best selling mystery and suspense authors including T. Jefferson Parker, (the books editor) William Tapply, Michael Connelly, Ridley Pearson, Dana Stabenow and other award winning writers.   I was "hooked."

Hooked, Line & Sinister is published by Countryman Press of Woodstock Vermont.  A hardbound volume of 319 pages, the price is $23.95, with all sales royalties going to fly fishing charities, Casting for Recovery which deals with woman cancer survivors and Project Healing Waters which helps returning veterans.  Supporting those two charities alone is worth the price not to mention the enjoyment of the stories.

The stories vary in length from author to author but average 30-40 pages in length.   Titles such as "Dead Drift," or "Mr. Brody's Trout" will appeal to the fly angler but titles like "The Blood-Dimmed Tide" or Cherchez La Femme" will charm the suspense reader.

Combining murder and mayhem with fishing may not seem like a congenial pairing- although in many ways they go hand-in-hand.  Catching fish has always been a mystery to me.  Why are fish rabid for a fly one day and catatonic the next?  I have no bloody idea.   Fishing is suspenseful as well.  Will the bugs come?  Does the next run hold a fish that will cause cold sweats and night mares for years to come?   We can only hope.

Hook, Line & Sinister is a book of stories that features spurned women and hit men, good cops and villains but most of all, fish.  Fish in rivers as well as the deepest seas, and it's the fish that give these mysteries the most shinning characters.

I will grant that on a warm June evening, the rivers of West Michigan are full of mystery and suspense and that going fishing is always better than reading about fishing. But on those nights when you are not on the water, this title will provide enjoyment and chills without the aroma of insect repellent.
