February 2010
Welcome to RiverQuest Charters/Muskegon River Lodge

Greetings!

We've rounded past the half way point in the winter season! March is only 28 days away! That means spring steelhead fishing is nearly upon us. Do you have your dates yet?

RiverQuest Charters
Whether you realized it or not, 28 days from now, it will be March 1, and that means that spring steelhead fishing will be the main calendar focus. The higher angle of the sun as we head through February triggers the main run of spring steelhead to enter the river and begin their migration towards the upstream spawning gravel. The runs and glides of the Muskegon River harbor chrome steelhead as they make their way upstream. Indicator nymphing, deep water drifting, and swinging sink tips gives the the fly angler the opportunity to pose for the camera with these magnificent trout! Don't have your dates on the calendar yet? Drop us a note or visit RiverQuest Charters website for details on how you can join us on the river this spring!

Turning the Corner cave in spring
As we turn the corner past the midpoint of winter, we know that it won't be long until the grounds around the Muskegon River Lodge are in full bloom. As we look forward to spring, we also look forward to time spent on the river fly fishing for trout and steelhead or perhaps arranging tee times. With spring thoughts in our minds, let us at Muskegon River Lodge help fulfill your needs. Whether it's a couple days of lodging "just to get away from it all" or one of our specially prepared packages of fly fishing or fly fishing and golf, we can help you turn the corner towards spring with something to look forward to! For more information, please visit our website or drop us an email.

Shooting The BreezeShooting the Breeze
Remember pheasant and quail hunting as it used to be? Hunt such storied places as Roller Coaster Hill, Rooster Ravine, and Mushroom Ridge. Enjoy a return to the good old days with a traditional pheasant and quail hunt. In collaboration with Muskegon River Lodge, guests wishing to combine wing shooting with their stay at the lodge, now have their own private club to hunt. Shooting The Breeze Hunt Club, located an hour NE of the lodge, spanning 380 acres of rolling hills, native prairie grasses, woodlands and edges, strategically placed row crops, and much more brings traditional wing shooting to life.

The Greater Cincinnati Fly Fishing Show, sponsored by the United Buckeye Fly Fishing Club, makes for a great start to the month of February. Each year, this show is held at the Receptions in Cincinnati, OH. The show is jam-packed with vendors and friendly people from the Mid-South region. For more information regarding this show or the club, please log onto their site.

Captains Dave Devries, Steven Kuieck, and Don Graham will be hosting the RiverQuest Charters booth this year.

March 13-14, 2010
Rounding out our featured shows of the year is the Michigan Fly Fishing Clubs show held at Macomb Community College in Warren, MI. This show is by far and away, the largest gathering of all that is fly fishing anywhere in the Mid-West. The club has more volunteers throughout this show than any other we attend. This show shines bright on an area that needs some sunshine! For more information on the show, please log onto the club's site.

Most of you who know me already understand that the "budget approach" to my purchases is simple- save and wait to buy nothing but the best- no matter what! For instance, when I equip my fly rods with their appropriate reels, I could certainly go with something less costly than an Abel Super Series reel, but when quality and performance are day-to-day necessities, you cannot shop by price alone.

Recently, I needed to purchase a new camera for my wife. A high quality digital SLR camera was in order. As a fan of Nikon from the get-go, I knew where I was going start looking. Much to my surprise, Nikon produced a new model this year, the D3000, which is a budget-minded SLR with all of the guts of the high end cameras but scaled down into an extremely user friendly package. Probably the greatest feature on this camera is the "guide mode," which helps the user diagnose the pictured situation and take the absolute best picture possible. For the challenged photographer this feature creates end results that rival the results of a professional photographer! Most surprising about this wonderful SLR camera is the package price with case and two lenses (18-55 VR, 55-200 VR) for less than $650!
For more information on this wonderful camera, log onto Nikon. If you are looking to purchase this camera, you may wish to talk to someone about the camera and its features. Please check the folks out at Norman Camera.
