Muskegon River Lodge
Snowed in?  What could be better than watching the snow pile up
outside as you snuggle up inside with a great book, coffee, or glass
of Cabernet?  When I first entered what is now the Muskegon River
Lodge, I quickly thought of how relaxing a winter weekend on the banks
of Muskegon River would be, as snow blanketed its wooded surroundings. Now, as the the winter season is nearly upon us, that very opportunity stands ready for you to come and enjoy this special time
of year in a way that only the Muskegon River Lodge can offer.  Need to unwind even more?  Hop into the bubbling hot tub or steaming sauna even as you and your friends watch the flakes drift down though the trees.

Looking to make your adventure at the Lodge even more memorable? Allow us to schedule a catered wine or Scotch symposia, featuring some of the world's finest beverages. Or, perhaps you are a cigar lover: the Muskegon River Lodge partners with D. Schuler's of Grand Rapids sample some of their finest cigars while relaxing in our game room and lounge.Need more information?

Winter Steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing brings solitude to the fly fisherman wishing to experience one of Michigan's most peaceful seasons on the water. Whether it is the snow glistening off the towering white pines, or the scurry of a mink traveling the river bank, beauty abounds up and down the miles of the Muskegon River. The moderate flows of the Muskegon River keep it relatively free of ice, except during the worst of winter, which allows the determined fly fisherman to pursue chrome all winter long. Slow woody glides, deep trenches, and tranquil pools harbor winter steelhead that feed on small nymphs and remnant eggs slowly drifting in the current.
Afternoon sunshine brings a degree of warmth to the chilly water, which can spark a great afternoon bite.  Attentively drifting each
cast knowing that this could be "the one" brings the winter fly fisher
ever closer to hookups and chrome brought to hand.

With our comfortable, safe jet boats moored streamside below the lodge, your length of time on the river can be custom tailored to the weather conditions and desires of our guests. A short walk from the boats, brings the warmth and comfort of the lodge and its amenities.

Recent wine symposia for our guests at the lodge hosted by Jim of D Schuler's brought one of the finest Napa Valley Cabernets that I have had the pleasure of enjoying.

Caymus Vinyards

Caymus Vineyrds was founded in 1972 by Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner on the family's Rutherford property. The Wagners produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1972 vintage. Their first Special Selection - from outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon lots given extended barrel aging - was made from the 1975 vintage. Caymus has made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon every year since it's founding, and now focuses entirely on this variety. Production has remained at the same level since the 1989 vintage.

The winery's 60-plus acres of estate Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley's Rutherford District continue to form the foundation of Caymus Cabernets. The Wagners also farm several other vineyards in the Napa Valley, ranging in location from the valley floor to mountain slopes. In addition, Caymus purchases grapes from selected Napa Valley growers who have had a long-term association with the winery.

Featured in our tasting event was the Special Select Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 and the Special Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2007. While the 1998 vintage was outstanding, others and I were drawn to the 2007. Both the 1998 and the 2007 feature an intense well-structure body, a delicate and refined middle, and finishes with the backbone only a Caymus can deliver. (read more about Caymus here)
