Claiming Adult Children as Dependents

Many children under the age of 19 (or 24 if in school) begin work and are required to file income tax returns.  These students may qualify as dependents on the tax return of their parent(s).  The IRS rejects income tax returns filed with a dependency exemption when that individual has already been claimed on another tax return. Therefore, it is important to have a conversation with your student(s) before income tax returns are filed to make them aware you are claiming them as dependents.  Also, if your student(s) decides to file their own tax returns, please remind them to print an extra copy and keep it in a safe place.

Even better, let us file your child's tax return.  By doing so, we will make sure only one dependency exemption is claimed, all required returns are correctly filed, and a copy is made for their records.
