O'Loughlin Report

Greetings!

Wallabies dominating

After the weekend's joy of trouncing the All Blacks and then pouring scorn on my many New Zealand mates, the week saw an unpredicted upswing in confidence from the jobs market. We have enjoyed an increase in client demand for talent which hopefully will manifest in a solid fourth quarter.

Whilst often the market will become more buoyant during spring, I can't help feeling the "nerves" we all experienced a few weeks back with the volatility in the global financial markets stifling any local optimism. I read that once Australians get used to volatility they very quickly learn to live with it. Well the volatility is still with us however people seem to be getting on with making hiring decisions.

Across the board we have been mandated on roles in the tourism and hospitality area, mining and resources as well as professional services and electronics. The media environment seems to be very active particularly in the "on-line" space and will continue to be so as the traditional medium of newspapers with circulation drops off. Rupert Murdoch himself has stated that the future of news copy will be in the on-line arena, and given his recent calamity it is easy to see why his papers are experiencing a drop in readership.

Finally I would just add that as we are in a time of great uncertainty, business growth will only happen if business leaders display certainty about their organisation's future. In speaking with a range of fund managers and listening to their view that we are in a "Financial Armageddon", this commentary does nothing to enhance my level of optimism or feelings of certainty. Personally, I think the future looks positive!
