The
O'Loughlin Report
Greetings!
An interesting trend that I have become aware of in recent months is the lack of responsiveness or procrastination from clients in making a decision, even when they have candidates 'in the line of fire' and are about to make an offer. This inability to make a hiring decision is a concern not only given the difficulty that many organisations have in attracting talent in the first place but because an otherwise enthusiastic candidate loses their motivation for the role because of this. In this market it is 'the quick and the dead'. Organisations need to be responsive to talent otherwise candidates can 'turn cold' on an organisation or, even worse, join the company with a sour taste even before commencing employment.
It is just not good enough for line management to drag their heels because they are occupied with other responsibilities. Creating an air of despondency towards the hiring process negates the strategic intentions of management and can be quite harmful to the image of the company in the broader market. And most importantly, it can deprive the company of opportunities to engage individuals who would provide them with competitive advantage.
The week has seen the release of some interesting economic data. Whilst there has been a marginal rise in unemployment with the national average being 5.1%, Queensland's potition at 5.6% highlights an interesting trend that Queensland is lagging against the national average with respect to economic growth. I suspect this has a lot to do with the recent flood which severely affected the mining sector and continues to do so. Despite this, I have observed an increase in activity in the employment market across the board.
So my advice is, when faced with the opportunity to engage talent, do it post haste!
