Dear

I was saddened on Sunday to learn of the passing of Halley Appleby, resulting from injuries sustained in a premier grade rugby match between The University of Queensland and GPS. No doubt you have heard the commentary and debate about injuries in sport that Halley's death has precipitated. My sadness is not only for the reason that Halley was my son Oliver's mate, but also for the loss of a young vibrant and talented character. The great irony is that in some small way, events such as this cause reflection on what is really important. Halley was a great young guy who lived an enormous life in a short period of time and, given the tumultuous response on social media, he was larger than life by anyone's standards.

I think that where we live and what we have as a nation is first class: the strength of our position economically and all the other fundamentals that drive our standard of living and our quality of life. The rumblings about the 'two-tiered economy' only create the potential for a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'. Whilst my thoughts are with Halley's family and his voluminous circle of friends, I feel that we still have an immense amount to look forward to, whether it be in relation to our own circumstances or with the future of our economy.

My outlook continues to be positive! The jobs forecast in many sectors is active. Unemployment in Queensland is low in comparison to our neighbours in other states and the energy and mining sectors are still screaming out for talent. Whilst all may not agree with the carbon tax, it will create employment opportunities.

As we move into the second half of the year I am bullish about the jobs market!
