All too often candidates treat their CV's with a lack of attention, which results in disinterest from the market. An individual's CV is as much a "branding exercise" as the individual themself is the brand. I had the pleasure this week to meet an iconic Australian sports star who I have approached for a Non-Executive Directors appointment and it was this meeting which has motivated this week's discussion. He has one of the most professional images in the corporate world, not for his on field exploits but for how he "manages" the image the corporate world has of him. He is an individual who's station is well beyond his years. Everything about him smacks of professionalism and his persona is mature and measured. He spells credibility plus to anyone who engages him on a topic as he is informed and well read. He is leant on for advice on some of the country's most significant boards.
This is all because he manages his brand and that starts with a well written and well presented resume. It really is one's road map when it comes to past experience but it also "spells" your individual brand in the jobs market. It is interesting and ironic as I had cause to meet another profiled Australian sporting identity who comes from an environment poles apart. What the two clearly have in common is a disciplined approach to everything they do at a corporate level. Whilst the sporting "thing" does gift people opportunities that others may not receive, they treat their lives with the discipline and professionalism they did in sport.
It has been a solid week for reflection as it has been a most active week in meeting talent. The market is bristling with opportunity!
