In a week where we farewelled Stathi Katsidis who died tragically in Hendra last week, I can't help but feel for his fiancé and her young boy who I had met at the races several times. In thinking about it, I couldn't help but reflect on an issue which is becoming more and more prevalent in the workplace and that is - work/life balance.
I know with Stathi that he, like many jockeys, battle constantly with the pressures of the job and the constant challenge of keeping the weight off. This and the competition to be at the top of your game year in and year out takes a huge toll as born witness by his sudden death. I have recently taken a number of mandates where the topic has been raised and the client has stipulated that they were promoting a work/life balanced environment. This is refreshing and when incorporated properly actually increases productivity in the workplace. When employees attend work refreshed having had a decent period of rest or a restful weekend, it is proven that work efficiency is accelerated. The constant "burning of the mid-night oil" ultimately leads to fatigue and under-performance.
I think we can all take a lesson in this and realise that balance is a necessity for longevity in the workplace. |
