"Someone reminded me I once said, 'Greed is good,' now it seems it is legal!" In the latest Wall Street film, Money never Sleeps, Gordon Gekko is released from jail after being committed to 20 years for insider trading. The movie highlights the carnage in Wall Street during the GFC, and how the global monetary system was brought to its knees through the greed and lust for money by the leaders of some of America's most prestigious banks. The underlying tenant however, is that whilst the US economy has the propensity to slide out of control, it also has an incredible ability to right itself. So as we sit here and listen to the pundits predicting a potential financial Armageddon, Australia is experiencing unpredictable "jobs growth", predictable interest rises and an economy that will be in surplus by 2013. Sounds great! The jobs market however, is still challenging and I have been reminded several times this week how "particular" clients can be even when skills are in short supply. We are finding, when taking a brief, that organisations are being very specific about their human capital requirements; even more so since the GFC took hold. I firmly believe that whilst a company should be strategic about its hiring intentions, it also needs to be flexible, adaptable and fluid so it can seize the day and take on people that possess the ability and aptitude to be successful in a role, and therefore give the employer the competitive advantage it is seeking. In conclusion, companies should be greedy when it comes to their search for talent and not be distracted or confused by hearsay and speculation. Seize the moment and take advantage. Procrastination will surely lead to uncertainty which impedes decision making, particularly when hiring intentions are involved!
Once again, I would like to extend an invitation for you to attend an outstanding event on the eve of the Melbourne Cup in support of the Abused Childs Trust.
