Asia
Two artists who share  a passion for color and complex forms defined by animated lines and soft planes exhibit in July.  Schwartzkopf recently moved to Seattle after studying and working in Anch- orage for several years. She has been a  guest teacher at many outstanding national residency programs. Freeman teaches painting, drawing and scupture at Kachemak Bay Campus of UAA .

Two New York Jazz Duo returns for Concert with Jazz Choir  July 9 and Vocal Jazz Workshop July 8

World class jazz musicians who have enjoyed performing and teaching in Homer return this month. Pianist, Peggy Stern is well-known as a composer, with four of her tunes featured in the Sher Real Book series. She has toured Europe, Japan, Australia and the US; she has appeared at Jazzpar (Copenhagen), Montreal, DuMaurier, Manly (Sidney), Port Townsend, Bell Atlantic, IAJE and JVC Jazz Festivals and Stanford Jazz Workshop. Sweet Sue has played and recorded with a variety of notable Jazz artists and she has also performed with Jazz VIPs like Art Blakey, Carmen McRae, Jon Faddis, Lew Tabackin, Wynton Marsalis, Lew Soloff and Ray Barretto.

Vocal Jazz Workshop: July 8 3 to 6 pm $35 register at Bunnell  

 

    

Tasting
Wine and Cheese Tasting July 13, 6 to 8 pm
$10 tickets at Maura's and Bunnell Street Arts Center 

 

Maura's Cafe and Catering presents the next in a seasonal series of tastings featuring her favorite selection of summer cheeses paired with delicious wines. Homer-grown dancer, Mariah Maloney returns
workshops July 17-19; performances July 17 and 19 at Bunnell

Mariah Maloney danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company (NYC) from 1995-2002. She is Artistic Director Mariah Maloney Dance (NY) since 2003 and Graduate Program Director The College at Brockport (NY) since 2011.  Mariah was born in Fairbanks and raised in Homer.  She began dancing in the Art Barn with Jill Berryman in 1975 and has continued ever since! It is a true pleasure for Mariah to return to Homer this summer, to give back to the vibrant community where she was raised.  Mariah creates solo and group work from the sensing body accessing movement scores and choreography through improvisation. She presents work in the United States, South America, Canada, Europe and Asia. In New York she is produced at Green Space; La MaMa; The Kitchen; Dance New Amsterdam; Judson Church; Danspace Project; Brooklyn Museum of Art.  

 

Ny-based dancer Brandi Norton, who was born in Kotzebue and raised in Fairbanks joins Mariah for a duo performance July 17 at Bunnell, 7:30 pm.

MossContemporary composer Lawrence Moss, faculty at University of Maryland at College Park and Homer-grown, NY-based dancer Mariah Maloney join an ensemble of four musicians for a unique, interdisciplinary collaboration featuring

  John Damberg, percussion

This project will also take place in Anchorage oat UAA Recital Hall on September 9 and is supported by a Harper Performing Arts Touring grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Bunnell Street Arts Center is supported in part by the City of Homer grants program through the Homer Foundation.
