Secrets Under the Skin, a one week exhibit, April 29 - May 4, Exhibit talk this Friday, April 29th at 7pm
This collaborative project includes video, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, photos and photographic assemblages that trace religious rituals, dances and rhythms linked across continents as a result of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The installation is based on extensive years of fieldwork in Ghana and Cuba by Dr. Jill Flanders Crosby, Professor of Theatre and Dance, University of Alaska Anchorage. Flanders Crosby's fieldwork. Artists collaborating on this project include Dr. Jill Flanders Crosby, Brian Jeffery, Brandon McElroy and Susan Matthews. Other artists represented through media include Marianne Kim, Melba Núñez Isalbe and Roberto Pedroso García.
The opening reception will be held Friday, April 29th from 5-8pm with the exhibit talk at 7pm. The Homer exhibit follows a premiere showing at Fundación Ludwig in Havana in December, 2010 and an opening at the Kimura Gallery, University of Alaska Anchorage in January. The Language of American Pottery, May 6 - June 1st
First Friday Talk May 6 at 6pm by curators Annette Bellamy and Steve Godfrey

Demonstrating the vibrant tradition of craft and artistic expression in contemporary American ceramics, May's exhibit features the work of 12 internationally recognized American potters. An educational exhibit talk by curators Annette Bellamy and Steve Godfrey opens the show. This national exhibition of functional pots, the first of its kind in Alaska, features outstanding pots by Randy Johnston, Shoko Teruyama, Scott Goldberg, Mary Barringer, Jan McKeachie-Johnston, Mary Louise Carter, Linda Christianson, Jennifer Allen, Ron Meyer, Andy Shaw, Naomi Dalglish and Michael Hunt-- all of whom are among the finest potters alive today.

Mother's Day: Homer columnist Andrea Van Dinther reads May 8, 5pm
Mamas, be affirmed, you are not alone. All readers will enjoy an evening listening to writer and mother of three, Andrea Van Dinther press into questions regarding parenting, consumerism, Earth-keeping and more. Humor and a sometimes not-so-gentle look at our world surrounds her search for calm understanding and acceptance while her voice entices listeners to accept their own search. Samantha Bennett, judge for the Alaska Press Club wrote about Andrea's writing, "Warm, down to earth, genuine, with startling flights of lyricism, Andrea's quicksilver reactions to her world find a resonance in each reader's heart."
Reading May 8th at 5 pm. Refreshments will be served and donations gladly accepted.

Over sixty artists are celebrated in Bunnell's 2011 Plate Project. Toast the new collection and pick a plate when you become a member (or renew your memebership). Join friends in an potluck membership party open to all at 5 pm on Saturday, May 14. All of the plates are created and donated by Alaskan artists and offered as premiums for membership in this non-profit arts center. A very brief membership meeting will take place at 6 pm, including the election of Board members.
After the festivities enjoy Caressa's music at 7pm, a free concert in Thanks for your support of this non-profit arts center! to all members and plate project artists including those who joined previously or renew at the event. Caressa is a Homer- based singer-songwriter gaining statewide recognition for her innovative music stylings.
