Shih  and Morelli exhibit explores passages, acceptance
Shih/Morelli
Morelli / Shih installation view, April

"Crossing the River of Death, A Prayer for Japan," by Homer ceramic sculptor, Cynthia Morelli in the foreground.  "Yesterdays," (43" x 48 inches) a mixed media painting by Tina Shih of Fairbanks at Bunnell Street Arts Center on the wall at left. Shih presents paintings and wall installations created over the past 15 years. Morelli presents new ceramic sculptures. One hardly believes that these two artists worked independently, each exploring themes of acceptance and transition, as their installation is so visually complementary, fluid and evocative.

Playwright Brian Hutton presents double feature April 8, 9, 8pm
Anchorage performance artist, poet, actor and puppeteer Brian Hutton returns to Bunnell with two plays, "20th Century Man" and "In their Own Words", a documentary play about anarchists Emma Goldman and Adolph Fischer (also the playwright's great-uncle), for two performances Friday and Saturday, April 8th and 9th at 8 PM. Hutton follows his Homer shows with a week of slam poetry workshops at Homer Middle School as Artist in Schools.
The "20th Century Man" muses on past, present and future as a mad scientist waits for his time machine to warm up, and reflects upon his return. "In Their Own Words" is the story of 19th Century anarchist Adolph Fischer, who was falsely convicted and executed at the "Haymarket Eight" trial in Chicago 1886. It is also the story of Emma Goldman, a young women, who on the day of the hangings, packed her bags to join the movement fighting for working class rights, against the draft and U.S. involvement in the 1st World War.

The script for "In Their Own Words" is woven from autobiographical writings, trial transcripts and newspaper clippings from the times.  Showtime for the double feature is 8 PM on April 8 and 9 at Bunnell Street Arts Center.

Community Video Portrait with Hasan Elahi April 14 Only
An installation sponsored by Alaska Design Forum, the Pratt Museum and Bunnell Street Arts Center features a community video portrait created by visiting artist Hasan Elahi. Hasan Elahi has proposed to facilitate Community Video Portrait as a communal vessel for the exploration of History as Common Space. The idea is to capture shared community history as Common Space, and present the media in an art installation at a public space. Elahi says, "This project is about telling stories; telling stories to each other... stories of Homer...communal stories, mythical stories, happy stories, sad stories... stories about Homer, stories about bars, stories about churches, stories about family...stories about the sea, stories about stories, and stories about the people in Homer." Come experience the one-day installation April 14 with an artists' talk at 6 pm. The video will be archived by the Pratt Museum.

Secrets Under the Skin Installation April 29 - May 4
Secrets Under the Skin

This collaborative project includes video, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, photos and photographic assemblages that document the link between religious Cuban and Ghanaian ceremonies. The installation is based on extensive years of fieldwork in Ghana and Cuba by Dr. Jill Flanders Crosby, Professor of Theatre and Dance, University of Alaska Anchorage. Flanders Crosby's fieldwork traces religious rituals, dances and rhythms linked across continents as a result of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Secrets under the Skin stems from Flanders Crosby's vision of translating field work experiences and the stories and lives of those she has danced beside into an installation that honors and respects cultural context, movement qualities and elder narratives, but is recast as a contemporary, multi-disciplinary project.Artists collaborating on this project include Dr. Jill Flanders Crosby, Brian Jeffery, Brandon McElroy and Susan Matthews. Other artists represented through media include Marianne Kim, Melba Núñez Isalbe and Roberto Pedroso García.

The opening reception will be held Friday, April 29th from 5-8pm with the exhibit talk at 7pm. The Homer exhibit follows a premiere showing at Fundación Ludwig in Havana in December, 2010, an opening at Museo Constantino Barreda Guerra in Perico, Cuba  and an opening at the Kimura Gallery, University of Alaska Anchorage in January.
