 Contemporary oil portraiture of nighttime eclectics
Nighttime Wardens and Vigilantes is, "a series of contemporary oil portraiture of nighttime eclectics," says painter, Brianna Allen. The artist moved to Homer full-time after working here two summers and completing a BFA in art from the University of Sounthern Maine. "The stoic and lusty characters who pump the veins within a Homer night," are Allen's inspiration. This is her first solo exhibit in Alaska. Bunnell Street Arts Center's Exhibition Program is generously sponsored by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

Concert by young Alaskan, Mariah Ver Hoef, March 2 at 7:30
 Multi-instrumentalist Mariah Ver Hoef offers a fundraising concert for 350 Earth. Born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, sixteen-year-old Mariah is inspired by the striking beauty of the wild and harsh climate of where she lives. At sixteen she writes about change and the simple fact of growing up. Ver Hoef currently attends the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Apart from music, she enjoys skiing, hiking, rock climbing, art and spending time with her older brother to whom she dedicated her latest album, Space Between Two Worlds. Mariah performs at Bunnell Street Arts Center Wednesday, March 2, 7:30 pm. Tix: $15 general; $12 Bunnell members; $8 youth. |

Northwest Great's Jazz Guitarist, Dan Balmer joins Karen Strid
 Monday, March 7, 7 pm Long considered one of the finest guitarists, composers, and educators in the Northwest, Dan Balmer joins Homer's own Karen Strid, professor of music at University of Alaska, Anchorage for an impromptu performance not to be missed! In 2009 Dan became one of only five Oregonians to be honored with membership in both The Oregon Music Hall of Fame and the Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Fame. He is the youngest person to be included in both Halls, and is hailed by the Los Angeles Times as, "the model of what a contemporary guitarist should be." Donation of $5 to $20 welcomed at the door - pay as you can.

Bunnell's 18th Plate Project Now Underway - come paint!
Bunnell's annual membership drive, The Plate Project, has commenced with dozens of bisqued plates awaiting painters at Bunnell Street Arts Center. The plates are generously created by local potters Ahna Iredale, Paul Dungan, Ruby Haigh, Lisa Wood, Lynn Naden and Marie Herdegen. Everyone interested in painting is encouraged to stop by. Experienced painters may simply sign-out a plate. New painters can learn how to effectively paint plates in workshop opportunites throughout March. The idea is to generate about 100 unique, functional collectables that provide essential operations support for this organization. Caressa in Concert March 12, 7:30 pm
Singer/Songstress of Alternative Indie-folk, Caressa is getting attention around Alaska. Based in Homer, her original songs incorporate altered tunings, time signature changes and creative percussion. Her songs are "vast and varied as the journeys they reflect." Caressa personalized guitar style and frank tell-it-like-it-is suggest folk music with colorful narratives, rich in poetry, harkening to the songwriting age of Dylan and Mitchell. Yet the presence of blues, roots, funk, punk, country and rock pervades through the course of an evening, and you may find yourself dancing in a delicious space where your mind fills in the space around guitar and vocal with your own experience. Tales and Songs of Freedom, Lindianne in concert March 20th, 5pm
Local Troubador Lindianne Sarno shares songs and tales of freedom in an intimate concert at 5pm on March 20th. Lindianne teaches piano and violin and is an energetic inspiration for aspiring musicians in Homer. $5-$20 donation pay as you can ($10 suggested)

Fireweed Youth Travel back through Time Immemorial
Jack Dalton and Allison Warden return for a second stint at Fireweed Academy March 21, 22 and 23 to wrap up a school-wide theater workshop started of Feb. 14-16 at Fireweed Academy as Artist in Schools in Homer. Students will be working on theater exercises and scenes from Jack and Allison's play, Time Immemorial, presented at Bunnell February 18 and 19.
Bunnell Street Art Center's Artist in Schools program is sponsored by Alaska State Council on the Arts with support from the Rasmuson Foundation a local grants from the Homer Foundation and AIS fundraisers like Jazzline and Maura's European Cheesetasting with Mel's wine selections from the Grog Shop at Bunnell, Feb 25 at 6, $10 donation.
