Garry Kaulitz, "Impressions" Monoprints, September 3-29, Artist talk Sept 3rd, 6pm
Garry Kaulitz
"In 2008 and again in 2009 I attended the Burning Man Project, a gathering of 40,000 who build a city every year in the Black Rock desert of Nevada. The project has evolved into an ecological experiment. It is a no commerce environment emphasizing gift giving, participation and unbridled self-expression. This show, "Impressions" represents the period of incubation as  information is sorted and incorporated into my personal unconscious. I open doors, try new directions; learn to trust some new perceptions. The works are monotypes and monoprints from collagraph plates. Created is bursts of energy. Each overlaying layer of texture, gesture or image try to capture the surreal and elusive impression of the legacy of dust and dreams dancing with the stars that is burning man."

Baskery

An alternative band from Sweden that describes their music as "high voltage banjo punk" and "mud-country" will help raise funds for Bunnell's Artist in School's with a concert at Homer's Mariner Theater on Sept 10. You'll love Baskery's spirit of global, unafraid, countrified wildness, and we hope its a great inspiration to Homer's very talented youth, and all the creativity and individuality possible through dedication to the arts.

Baskery will also perform and speak to Homer High School students for a free outreach at 2:30pm on September 10th.

Proceeds from the concert will help expand Bunnell's independent Artist in Schools program to Kenai Peninsula schools such as Seldovia, Ninilchik, Cooper Landing and Nanwalek, with the additional support from Jocelyn Shiro Weslphal's Jazzline, the Ashley J. Logan fund of the Homer Foundation, the Alaska State Council on the Arts and Jewel. The Artist in Schools program places local and national artists in schools for one to two week residencies and serves over 1500 students a year.

Another residency program from USA Artists with support from the Rasmuson Foundation that brought us Jim Woodring in March of 2010 brings us Michael Houston, a native North Carolinian living in New York.  A woodcutter, printmaker, painter, carpenter, musician, filmmaker and collaborator Michael Houston founded Cannonball Press to publish affordable woodcut prints.  This perennially disheveled North Carolinian specializes in C.S.M.R.I.H.C.M. (Clumpy Subject Matter Rendered In Heavy Choppy Marks).

jazzlineLater in October Jocelyn Shiro-Westphal's Jazzline with youth and adult dancers on Friday October 22nd at 7pm and Saturday October 23rd at 3pm and 7pm.  The generosity and talents of dancers, volunteers, and Jocelyn's commitment to the arts raise over $4000 for Artist in the Schools.  These blockbuster shows are fun for the whole family and showcase the incredible talent of Homer Jazz dancers.
Bunnell is supported in part by grants from the City of Homer Grants Program through the Homer Foundation, the Rasmuson Foundation, the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
