Jim Woodring, Artist-in-Residence, March 1 - 31
Funded by the Rasmuson Foundation and United States Artists. Well-known Seattle cartoonist, Jim Woodring will transform Bunnell's gallery space into a working studio for the month of March and exhibit his work on the walls. Woodring is the author of several graphic novels and cartoon strips, has worked in animation and currently publishes a blog. In December 2006 he became one of the first group of United States Artists fellows. His cartoons and graphic novels display a hallucin-atory, sometimes nightmarish world that haunted him
through childhood and much of his adult life. Several events are open to the public, but feel free to stop by the gallery to meet Jim and look at his work. He looks forward to working amidst company.
Animation Screening Friday, March 5, 7pm A selection of Jim's collaborations with guitarist Bill Frisell, including Worse and Worse, Whim-Grinder and Lazy Robinson; plus mindboggling interpretations of Jim's Frank stories by Japanese animators.
Book Release Party Wednesday, March 17, 5pm A narrated on-screen tour of Jim's newly released 100-page wordless graphic novel Weathercraft, followed by a Q&A and booksigning.
Pen-and-Ink Workshop Sunday, March 20, 1 to 5pm Learn to handle a dip pen and india ink for maximum expressiveness and control in comics, illustration or academic drawing. $15, materials provided or bring your own.
"I promise to spare you all my worst visions." - Jim Woodring

A passion for Art and Education: Spotlight on Jocelyn Shiro Westphal, Jazzline and Artist in Schools
Did you know that Jazzline dance is a major sponsor of local Artist in Schools? That's because art education is a passion of professionally-trained dancer and physical therapist, Jocelyn Shiro-Westphal, who can be found working with special needs children five days a week at Paul Banks Elementary. It has been said that artists never really retire; perhaps they also never really clock out at the end of a day. After work, several days a week, Jocelyn teaches dance at her Homer studio to adults and youth groups ranging in age from preschool to highschool. And every year, Jocelyn's passion for dance, together with the talent and energy of her students and the committment of their parents and volunteers culminate in Jazzline, an outstanding showcase of jazz and dance at the Mariner Theater. Over 30 dancers and another dozen community volunteers (from lighting to costuming) put on three sell-out shows, and donate the proceeds to art education programs in Homer. Jazzline is a major sponsor of Bunnell Street Arts Center's Artist in Schools program, providing art education to over 1500 kids and their teachers in all media by local artists in Homer area K-12 schools. The program, like Jocelyn's mentorship of young dancers, nurtures creativity and vision in the next generation of Homer artists.
