End of Year Appeal What
truly enriches your life? Tough economic times invoke much thought
about what wealth really means. Our wealth as an arts community should
not be
measured by economic status. We flourish through creativity,
participation and opportunities for growth. That is what Alaska's arts
scene is
all about. The arts remind us of the different ways we are smart,
promoting
problem solving, independence, creativity and learning how to make more
with
less. Isn't this exactly what we need as a global community? More than
ever, Bunnell Street Arts
Center needs and values your participation at any level. The shrinkage
of the
global economy this year has been felt severely at Bunnell... fewer
out-of-state
visitors, fewer collectors, lower corporate contributions.
Nevertheless, today
Bunnell is
more people, more programs, more memberships and more conversations
about what
the arts mean to us. Invest here---we'll build
inspiration and excitement, community and friendship, sweetness and
sustenance
to get you through the whole year.
An attitude
of scarcity creates scarcity. If you aren't sure what to do in these
tough times, share a little of what you have and soon you'll feel a
whole
lot richer! Thank you! --Asia Freeman and Adele Groning

November 6-December 2: James Behlke, paintings
Opening reception Nov 6, 5-7, Artist talk at 6pm. Jim Behlke grew up watching the northern
lights in Fairbanks. He often sketched them at night and painted from the
drawings indoors. Now he's working from memory and from his stash of drawings.
He uses "wet in wet" techniques to produce color-field canvases that
appear like Auroras. Behlke has a
BFA in printmaking from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and an MFA in
painting from the University of Southern California.

November 6-December 2: Mary Ver Hoef, paintings
Opening reception Nov 6, 5-7, Artist talk at 6pm.
Out of the Woods: "What comes out of
the woods? An emergence of new growth, a profusion of wildflowers, a rainbow of
leaf color and, of course, moose; these are the subjects that Fairbanks
painter, Mary Ver Hoef, explores in the artwork for her show at Bunnell. The bright
acrylic paintings are edged with black and white predella, ink on paper border
images that are part of her signature style. Primarily a landscape painter, moose are a newer subject for Mary."
