DOG SAFETY

Each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children.

Teach children to exercise caution around unknown dogs and always follow the basic rules of dog safety.
T

* Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. If one approaches you remain calm and STILL.

* Never run from a dog, flail your arms or scream.

* Never stare directly at a dog.

* Never disturb a dog while she's eating or sleeping.

* Never disturb a mother dog or her puppies.

* Do not pet any dog without allowing her to approach and sniff you first.

Tip of the Month

It is best to keep all cats indoors during the month of October, regardless of their color, but especially if they happen to be black.
(Indeed, cats are safer indoors any time of year).

Even though there may be no cultists in your neighborhood, the sheer number of people out and about on Halloween along with increased vehicular traffic, makes the outdoors a frightening and unsafe place for small furry creatures.

DEAR ROCKY,

Dear Rocky,
I overheard my mom talking about doing Agility training with me.  I am very excited about this! I get bored in the house all day and have started to chew my paws and chase my tail.  I am curious about the common injuries a canine athelete like myself might experience.
Sincerely,
Sassy the Sheltie from Surprise
Dear Sassy,

Personally I like watching T.V. all day with an ocassional saunter into the backyard.  However, my friend Rex the Border Collie, is an agility expert.  Rex told me that foot pad cuts and nail trauma are common. The most common injury in sporting dogs involve the shoulder.  The impact from landing after a jump can injure the shoulders especially if the dog is infrequently active and overextend themselves. Start with a good physical exam from your veterinarian before you get started.

Have a wonderful and safe October.
