Thanksgiving Doggie Dinner

RECIPE

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Makes: 9 1-cup servings

Ingredients

3 lb skinless and boneless turkey pieces (light and dark meat)

1 cup cooked oatmeal

1 lb sweet potatoes, cubed

2 Tbsp cranberry sauce

1 Tbsp olive oil (optional)

Directions

Use turkey leftovers or roast the turkey:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Lightly oil a roasting pan.

2. For skinless, boneless breast or thigh, cook 30-45 minutes or until the meat juices run clear when pierced with a skewer. Let cool.

3. Dice the meat into large pieces.

4. If using fresh sweet potatoes, roast with the turkey for about 25-30 minutes or until tender. Let cool, then peel and dice.

5. Meanwhile, cook the oatmeal according to package instructions.

6. Mix together the turkey meat, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce. If using olive oil, add it now and mix thoroughly.

When our Pets are Senior Citizens

Before any medical signs become apparent, behavioral changes can serve as important indicators that something is changing in an older pet, which may be due to medical or other reasons.

Sometimes changes in your pet's behavior may seem contradictory - such as an older pet that has symptoms of hearing loss but also seems more sensitive to strange sounds.

Possible Behavior Changes in Older Pets

  • Increased reaction to sounds
  • Increased vocalization
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Decreased interaction with humans
  • Increased irritability
  • Decreased response to commands
  • Increased aggressive/protective behavior
  • Increased anxiety
  • House soiling
  • Decreased self hygiene/grooming
  • Repetitive activity
  • Increased wandering
  • Change in sleep cycles
  • Decreased appetite

If routines and behavior changes in your pet contact us so that we may help determine if your pet is exhibiting early signs of illness. In fact, geriatric pets should have semi-annual veterinary visits instead of annual visits so signs of illness or other problems can be detected early and treated.

Dear Rocky,

Dear Rocky,

I am a 7 year old Chihuahua and my housemate,Bella, is a 7 year old Boxer and Shepherd mix. I say that we are the same age in human years but she is claiming to be older in human years.  We have wagered a bet that the loser has to give up their treats to the winner for one month.  Can you tell us who is correct?

Sincerely,

Carlos and Bella

Dear Carlos and Bella,

I typically like to side with my smaller canine friends, however, it will be you, Carlos, who will have to give up your treats for a month!   Larger breeds tend to have shorter life-spans because they age quicker. So seven year old Bella, who is probably 50-90 pounds, is about 55 years old in human years.  Seven year old dogs under 20 pounds are about 45 human years of age.

Have a wonderful and safe November.

Thank you for trusting us to provide

the health care needs

for your beloved, furry family members.

Please remember we will be closed Thursday Novemeber 24th. We will reopen regular business hours 7am-10pm on November 25th.
