Using Incentives to Reduce Injuries and Enrich Your Safety Culture
When: Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 1:00 pm Eastern - 60 minute, audio/web conference
Safety professionals develop incentive and reward programs with the best of intentions. The end goal: To save lives and reduce injuries. But in the real world, such programs can be so abused they have just the opposite effect. Used incorrectly, incentive programs designed to create a safer workplace end up jeopardizing the very people they should help protect. One common example, workers rewarded for fewer injuries simply stop reporting them. The result: Hazardous conditions aren't addressed and injuries continue. Fortunately, there's a better way. This audio conference will explain why the most common uses of safety incentives do more harm than good -- and will give you concrete examples of how to use incentives and rewards effectively. The proper use of safety incentives and rewards can increase the occurrence of safe behaviors and reduce at-risk behaviors -- as well as boost self-esteem, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. This audio conference will teach you practical ways to make this happen. The following specific topics will be covered: - The wrong and right way to use safety incentives
- Why some safety incentive programs can be insulting
- Critical differences between incentives, rewards, and positive reinforcers
- Why safety leaders should stop using the term "positive reinforcement"
- How "intrinsic reinforcement" can be used to direct and motivate behavior
- When rewards should be used without incentives
- Why rewards sometimes stifle performance
- How to deliver (and receive) safety recognition
- How to celebrate the achievement of safety milestones
- Why it's more appropriate to say "motivation follows success" rather than "success follows motivation"

Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP): Developing a SWPPP and the New EPA Storm Water Rules September 27, 2011, 1pm ET (12pm CT, 11am MT, 10am PT) 90 minutes including live Q&A
Live Audio Conference: $219 Live Audio Conference + CD: $288 CD + Manual Package: $219 Cities, states and the EPA are placing new emphasis on storm water discharges from industrial facilities, construction sites and municipalities. They are conducting storm water pollution prevention plan inspections at industrial facilities and construction sites. Some of these inspections have resulted in storm water violations with fines. Nationwide, storm water is a leading source of water pollution and consequently, EPA is moving forward with plans to set storm water standards under the national pollution discharge elimination system. This change in direction will require industry, developers, states and local governments to take steps to reduce runoff, including development of a SWPPP or MS4 program. This live audio conference will inform you about regulatory compliance with NPDES storm water discharge regulations and provide information for development of an effective SWPPP. Information provided in this audio conference will assist you in developing SWPPPs for industrial facilities and construction sites. Further, enforcement examples will be discussed to help prepare you for an inspection focused on Clean Water Act compliance. It is critical for those responsible for implementing storm water pollution prevention plans to avoid potential storm water violations and fines. Learning Objectives: - You will be able to identify who is responsible and applicable for construction and industrial sites.
- You will be able to review SWPPP regulatory changes.
