Happy summer!  We are so  excited to kick off the season with great new opportunities at Ludington Library and the brand new Keith Wilson Children's Center.  And, check out all the programs available at both Ludington and Scottville libraries and all the great services and resources available online for adults and for kids.

 

Don't have time to come to the library?  MCDL's collection of downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, music and videos continues to grow.  Check out all the new titles at www.MCDLibrary.org/upnorth.   Email librarian@MCDLibrary.org and ask to be added to the NEW ONLINE TITLE LIST to get first notice when new items are added to our digital collection.  Downloadable audiobooks and eBooks from the Library's digital collection are compatible with computers, Nooks, Kindles, iPads, many audio devices and Apple and Android mobile devices.

The Keith Wilson Children's Center

is Now Open!
 

  

Four years of fundraising and seven months of construction to bring you the Keith Wilson Children's Center at Ludington Library

 

Mason County District Library is devoted to Children's Literacy. The Board and Staff at MCDL firmly believe that the key to every child's future is proficiency in reading. In addition to providing a wide variety of reading material for children, MCDL offers programs, parties and events to enhance the reading experience. Currently, thousands of children attend Story Times, Book Clubs, and other events at the Ludington Library annually. With the addition of the Keith Wilson Children's Center, we can build on our success and grow even more readers.  This wonderful new addition includes:

 

Story Time and Sailboat Play Area

  • Moveable sailboat to open up the children's play area
  • Space for preschool toys and costumes to encourage imaginative free play
  • Games and puzzles for preschool learning
  • Arts and crafts supplies to practice fine motor skills
  • PLAYING is LEARNING

West Shore Bank Room

  • Moveable wall - room can be enclosed or open to Children's Room
  • Plenty of space for Library programs, events and art activities
  • Can be locked away from the rest of the building for public use after hours
  • Includes a kitchen/utility area with refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher (snacks are served during many children's programs), washer/dryer (costumes, puppets and soft toys need washing) that is also available for public use for meetings and events
  • Sound system, projector

Craig R. Rasmussen Outdoor Activity Area

  • Accessible from West Shore Bank Room
  • Enclosed by a fence
  • Outdoor programs - Llamas, Science Camp, Hula Hoops and more
  • Free play - Ludington Library has volleyball, croquet, jump ropes, balls, hula hoops, a giant chess set and more for public use
  • MCDL Board and Staff believe physical activity is essential to a child's health and ability to learn

  • Space for more public-use computers and personal laptops
  • Young Adult Area sponsored by House of Flavors
  • Northwestern Bank Business Center

Summer Reading Kick-off Party 

 

Dream Big! Read!  The 2012 Summer Reading Program for Ludington and Scottville Library will kick-off with a party full of games, crafts, stories, snacks, a chance to sign up for summer reading and more fun,

Friday, June 8, 7:00-9:00 pm at Ludington Library.  Registration is required.

The Library closes at 6:00 pm and doors will reopen at 6:50.  All children must be signed in and out by an adult.  Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult for the entire party.

Learn About Pet Safety 
 
Join us at Ludington Library Monday, June 11, 1:00 pm for a program on pet safety. This presentation by Lakeshore Animal Friends will discuss safety around animals, the needs of pets, and the responsibility of caring for a living creature.

 

California Dreamin' 
 
Come on a dream trip with us at Ludington Library, Monday June 18, 1:00 pm.  This fast-paced show combines the music of the early Rock and Roll era with history, comedy, and dance.  Lots of audience participation makes it fun for children of all ages.

 

Adventureland Puppets 
 

Adventureland Puppets will perform at the Library at in Scottville at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 21. Fans of all ages are welcome to attend. 

 
Meet the Llamas 
 

You are invited to Ludington Library, Monday, June 25, 6:30 pm to meet the llamas.  Learn about and interact with these interesting furry creatures!

Ceiling Art Available for Pick-up 

 

Come and Get it! Ceiling paintings from the old Children's Area are available in the Rotary Room of Ludington Library until June 24.
Pickets Available for Pick-up 

 

The handpainted pickets from the old north lawn will be available for pick-up in the Craig Rasmussen Outdoor Activity Area at Ludington Library until June 16.

 

Block Party Saturdays 

 

Children and their families are invited to a Block Party using Lego brand bricks every Saturday, 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, at Ludington Library.  Blocks will be provided by the library.  Children under age 3 are NOT invited to this event - there are many, many small parts that could be ingested. 

All Hands on Tech Club
for Middle Schoolers  

 

Middle Schoolers are invited to join the All Hands on Tech Club Wednesdays and Thursdays 3:30 pm at Ludington Library.  Members can innovate with  Hand-Held Video Games, eReaders, tablets, and more.  You must be in 6th grade or older, have Internet permission and a Library account in good standing.

 

Dig into Digital Mondays at the Library 
 

Ludington Library continues to offer one-on-one instruction on using eReaders and audio devices with Library materials. Drop in Mondays any time between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm at Ludington Library to test drive top-selling devices and learn how to use the Library's FREE downloadable collection. 

 

If you already have a device and are looking for assistance, please bring a laptop, if able, and the USB cable to connect it to a computer.

This online language-learning service, with over 90 language options including English for speakers of other languages, allows learners to access the system remotely and offers an unprecedented number of learning options.


Transparent Language Online features listening, reading, speaking, and writing exercises, as well as integrated pronunciation analysis, Byki vocabulary acquisition exercises, conversational language courses, video grammar lessons, and a robust social community. 

To access Transparent Language, all you'll need is to create a Transparent Language account.  Once your account has been created you can access Transparent Language on any computer.
