Does Positive Thinking Really Help?

YES!  Positive thinking helps reduce stress and can improve your health!!  Your body is always responding to your thoughts, emotions and actions.  Is your glass half-empty or half-full?

Since optimism affects many areas of your health and well-being, it is worthwhile to try to maintain a positive perspective.  This doesn't mean that you ignore problems, it just means that you approach unpleasant circumstances in a more positive and productive way.

Think about the fact that there is a constant stream of thoughts that run through your mind each day.  This occurs automatically and these thoughts can be positive or negative.  If you have primarily negative thoughts, you can try to apply a positive twist to them.
For example:
  • "I can't, I've never done this before." ---  "This is an opportunity to learn something new."
  • "No one ever bothers to communicate with me." ---  "I'm going to get the communication channels open."
  • "I'll never reach my goal, it's too hard." --- "I will try my best and take steps in the right direction each day."
What thoughts run through your mind that you can change into more positive, affirming and accepting thoughts?

The health benefits of positive thinking include:
  • Better mood, less depression
  • Increased life span
  • Lower levels of distressing emotions
  • Greater resistance to the common cold
  • Feeling better mentally and physically
  • Reduced risk of heart disease
  • Better coping skills during times of stress
One of the most important benefits of a positive outlook is that it enables you to cope better with stress,  which reduces the harmful effects of stress on your body.  It's also been shown that optimistic people live healthier lifestyles.  They get more exercise, eat better and have reduced rates of smoking and alcohol consumption.

I know it can be challenging to maintain a positive attitude. Self-criticism, judgment and pessimism seem to creep in automatically, especially during stressful times.  By stopping and noticing your thoughts, you can challenge the negative ones by telling yourself something that is both true and positive.

Sometimes, we need help with a more optimistic perspective and during those times talking with a supportive friend or family member can lead to turning thoughts around and seeing a situation in a more positive way.

Do you ask for help when you have a negative outlook or are worried that things won't work out well?  When it's hard to believe in yourself, or that things will work out the way they need to, talking with someone who believes in you and is supportive can make such a difference.

I hope you'll take the time to turn some negative thoughts to positive ones - and improve your physical health at the same time!!  Please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions.

Warm regards,

Kristen
