Seeing the Light
|
You've worked incredibly hard to make your yard your own personal garden of Eden, but why just show it off during the day? With the proper lighting, it can be just as beautiful at night. But that's just one bonus. Here's a few more.
Landscape lighting can add to the resale value of your home.
Good lighting on steps, walkways and driveways helps prevent accidents.
Added security: Floodlighting and other landscape lighting can deter thieves and vandals.
If you are interested in landscape lighting, contact Bill Taylor with Outdoor Lighting Concepts at 901-767-6773. A longtime expert on outdoor lighting, he can help light cottages to castles!

We Care
| At Above and Beyond, we continue to care about the community. This month's winner of our ABC contest is St. Mary's Catholic Church Soup Kitchen. The charity has been operating continuously for 136 years and serves the poor, the homeless, and the less fortunate more than 50,000 meals yearly. For being selected as our charity of the month, the soup kitchen received a check for $500. If you are interested in nominating a charity, click here.

Weekend
Getaways
|
As Americans, there is one thing we all love to do each summer: Get in the car and hit the road, family vacation style. But in these tough economic times, it's not always possible to take a full week- or two-week break. But take heart, you can still feel like you've left home without traveling too far or blowing your budget. The following weekend trips are lots of fun, just a short drive and kid friendly.
1. Mammoth Cave National Park, Cave City, Ky. That massive cave that kids love to explore is just a small part of the attractions of Kentucky's cave country. We're talking a bit of everything, from nature trails and kangaroos to roller coasters, museums and water sports. Lodging is cheap and camping is available. For more information, click here.
2. St. LouisWhen it comes for free stuff to do, one city has them all beat: St. Louis. There are tons of attractions that won't cost you a red cent, including: The St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Science Center, St. Louis Art Museum and The Missouri History Museum, plus lots of concerts and festivals held throughout the summer months. Check it out at explorestlouis.com. 3. NashvilleNashvillians want the rest of the country to know. Even though a couple of its main attractions are closed because of the massive flood, it's still open for business, with plenty to see and do. There are two major water parks, a zoo, antebellum mansions to tour by the dozen, plus the state capitol building and museums galore, including the Tennessee State Museum and the Tennessee Central Railway Museum. |
A Tribute to My Dad
| June is here. Time for warm weather, barbecues and the celebration of dads. Even though it will be a tough Father's Day. -- it is the first without my dad -- it will also be a great one. Why? Because I have four beautiful kids of my own. I have the opportunity to pass on the great values and morals that my dad instilled in me , plus I have so many great memories of spending time with my dad.
Jim Harmeier Sr. truly represented the real meaning of a great dad. We had lots of fun times together, yet he worked extremely hard to make sure our family was taken care of. Discipline was something dad was great at. He knew when to raise his voice or when to have a long talk with us, helping us understand what we did wrong and how we could improve.
Whatever he did, he put his heart into it and gave it 100 percent. Dad was truly focused on Sundays, a family day for us. My fondest memories are family barbecues, going swimming, throwing horseshoes and just talking about life with him. Sometimes it is extremely hard knowing I can't go to him for advice, especially dealing with the many struggles of running a small business. But then I realize he is always there. He is in my heart.
So on this Father's Day I want to say thank you to my dad for being the most generous, loving, patient, and dedicated man that I've ever known. And to all the dads out there,I say: live today like there is no tomorrow, be patient and enjoy your children. I ask that you celebrate your dad, hug his neck, tell him how much you appreciate him and make sure he knows you love him.-- Nathan Harmeier
